29 MARCH 2021FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEThe New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union is slamming Timaru Mayor Nigel Bowen’s topless photoshoot in today’s Timaru Herald as ratepayer-funded political advertising.Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, “Perhaps going topless was an attempt to show solidarity with Timaru ratepayers who are being asked to give the shirts off their backs with a ten percent rate hike. Regardless, this looks like the Mayor misappropriating Council funds to boost his own profile and re-election chances. This spending should never have been signed off.”“The only political leaders who do this are Putin, and the Mayor of Timaru. Frankly, Putin did it better.”“We’re calling on Mayor Bowen to put his shirt back on, and pay back the cost for this ad from his personal re-election fund.”
