West Auckland families in need have been given a timely boost this Christmas thanks to support from Henderson-Massey and Waitākere Ranges Local Boards.
The boards helped fund the Visionwest ‘five days of Christmas’ event in partnership with Auckland City Mission, which provides support, including food packages and gifts for children as well as budgeting services for about 3000 West Auckland whānau who might have otherwise gone without this Christmas.
Jobs on the day included packing around 240 trollies, boxes, and kai for people in need. Waitākere Ward Councillor Linda Cooper and Henderson-Massey Local Board member Ingrid Papau both volunteered on day one of the event.
Huge difference
This is such a valuable event that makes a huge difference for many whānau in West Auckland,” says Councillor Cooper.
“I was delighted to be able to get along and get stuck into the mahi along with so many other people.
“There was a fantastic sense of community and purpose on the day and it really shows how Westies pull together for each other when it matters most.”
Support
Henderson-Massey Local Board Member Ingrid Papau agrees.
“It’s been a really tough year for everyone and for lots of people, Christmas can be a real struggle to put food on the table and make ends meet,” says Ingrid.
“It was a great day, volunteering with people from all walks of life in what has been an extraordinary year for us all.
“I’m really pleased that the boards have been able to support this initiative and go some way to helping families in need this Christmas.”
Acute need
Visionwest CEO Lisa Woolley commented on the event saying that the support given is invaluable.
“Christmas is a time of acute need for many whānau across West Auckland. This year’s need has been accentuated by the presence of COVID-19 which has affected so many. We expect 5 Days of Christmas will help around 3000 whānau in need during this Christmas season.
“We are incredibly grateful for all the community and corporate group support from those who are working with us. We also encourage anyone who is able to help or donate – either financial support or toys or gifts – to get in touch with us.”
