South Korea / Japan: Typhoons Maysak and Haishen

Typhoon Maysak is currently tracking north over the Pacific and has made landfall as a category 2 typhoon over the Pusan area of South Korea the morning of Thursday 3 September (local time). It is forecast to weaken and pass further north-east over the country. Typhoon Maysak may bring heavy rain and strong winds.

Typhoon Haishen is currently tracking north-west over the Pacific as a category 5 typhoon and is forecast to pass over the Okinawa and Kyushu islands of south-west Japan from Sunday 6 September through to Monday 7 September (local time), before weakening to a category 3 and passing further north-west towards southern South Korea. Typhoon Haishen is forecast to continue north through South Korea reaching Seoul on Tuesday 8 September as a category 3 typhoon. Typhoon Haishen may bring heavy rain and strong winds.

New Zealanders in Japan and South Korea are advised to stay away from the affected areas as advised by local authorities, and to follow their advice including evacuation orders. Seek suitable shelter. Travellers staying in travel accommodation should follow the guidance of their accommodation management and/or tour operators. It is generally considered sensible practice not to venture outdoors and remain well away from the sea during a typhoon. It is also important to keep family and friends in New Zealand updated on your welfare.
