Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is consulting, on behalf of the Minister of Transport, on proposed changes to Land Transport Rules.
The Land Transport Rule: Regulatory Stewardship (Omnibus) Amendment 2020 allows minor changes to 23 Land Transport Rules to occur all at once, instead of consulting on each rule individually.
The proposed changes clarify requirements to help understanding, align legislation with current practices and technology, and support enforcement.
Some of the proposed changes include allowing camera systems that meet approved safety standards to be substituted for a rear-view mirror, clarifying the requirement for heavy goods vehicles to display a red parking light at night, and permitting the rear door emergency button on passenger service vehicles to be disabled during a driver’s rest break.
Other changes enable emergency services personnel to use roadway signs when they are the first responders at a crash or emergency, creating new signs for Police to use, and allowing snow ploughs to operate at any time of the day.
The proposed Land Transport Rule: Regulatory Stewardship (Omnibus) Amendment 2020 ensures legislation is sound and robust and working for us all.
Public consultation closes at 5pm on Friday 16 October 2020.
Subject to the approval of the Minister of Transport, the proposed Rule changes would come into effect in the first quarter of 2021.
