Police and ESR are excited to announce the development of a real-time drug screening tool for frontline officers to use while working in our communities.
The handheld device will allow our officers to test for the three most harmful and commonly used drugs on the New Zealand market; methamphetamine, MDMA and Cocaine.
A six-month trial of the devices will be carried out across Tāmaki Makaurau as well as in Canterbury and Central Police Districts.
Media who are interested in finding out further information and seeing how the devices work are invited to attend a briefing at ESR on Thursday 30 July 2020 at 10am.
Acting Assistant Commissioner: Investigations Mike Johnson and ESR Forensic Research and Development Project Manager Dion Sheppard will be available to speak with media.
ESR is located at 120 Mt Albert Road in Sandringham.
Media are asked to arrive by 9.45am to allow time to set-up.
Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP to media@police.govt.nz.
