Emergency services remain at the Ruahini Canal near McLaren Falls Road, Omanawa after receiving reports that a vehicle had gone into the water.
Police were alerted to the incident at around 1.20pm.
The canal water levels are to be lowered over the next two to three hours to allow better access to the area.
Until this happens Police cannot confirm any details about the vehicle or any possible occupants.
