After successfully completing Diploma of Applied Writing with NorthTec’s graduating class of 2017 Barbara Carr has gone on to self-publish her first book From the Bottom of the Well.
The story explores a boy’s journey through poverty, loss, friendship and betrayal, and is Carr’s debut novel.
When speaking on the motivation behind the book, Carr talks about her childhood fascination on the Boer War and the importance of historical fiction plays in provide accessible information that’s enjoyable for the reader.
As a Te Tai Tokerau local the accessibility of NorthTec’s Applied Writing programmes was a huge motivation in Carr’s decision to study here.
“Having local opportunities for writers to study and support one another is invaluable,” Carr says on her time at NorthTec.
With NorthTec, Carr was able to develop her writing skills and gain confidence in her ability to write while meeting other like-minded students.
“NorthTec was critical in helping me understand how to get a book from being just a manuscript to getting it published” Carr says.
