More than 200 Northlanders have applied to study through NorthTec’s fees-free online learning initiative, which was launched two weeks ago with TANZ eCampus.

The fees-free offer, which is currently running until 18 May, is designed to help people in the Northland region upskill or reskill during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was launched on 14 April, and has already received a strong response from local communities.

NorthTec and TANZ eCampus are partners in delivering fully online learning for students, who study in their own home and at their own pace. The current initiative to support people and employers in the region builds on the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) ‘Fees-Free’ options.

NorthTec Chief Executive, Wayne Jackson, said: “We are very pleased with the response to this initiative, with more than 200 people applying in the first two weeks. NorthTec has recognised that many people may be facing a difficult time, and that there may be job losses as a result of the pandemic. This offer will help people retrain, while in their own homes, with no fees – we hope it will significantly contribute to the region’s economic recovery.”

The NorthTec TANZ eCampus portfolio of programmes can be found at https://www.northtec.ac.nz/programmes/ecampus, along with details on how to enquire and apply.

NorthTec can loan Chromebook devices to learners to help them study at home; details can be given during the application process. NorthTec can also assist with  range of data support schemes that are available to support learning if required; again, details can be provided to students at the point of enrolment.

There are terms and conditions to the NorthTec TANZ eCampus fees-free initiative. Applicants must live in the Northland region, and may be required to provide proof of their address. They must enrol before 18 May, and begin their study programme before 1 July 2020.
