Local board members will give action to the Māori proverb on 14 March at the 2020 Bilingual Hikoi at Manurewa Marae when they seek input into their three-year plan.
Board members will be on hand from 11.30am to 2pm to speak to people about their ideas and aspirations for the area.
“Manurewa Local Board is committed to strengthening our relationship with Mana Whenua and Maatawaka within our rohe”, says board chair Joseph Allan.
“We are also very pleased Councillor Angela Dalton holds the outcomes for Māori portfolio for the Governing Body”.
The hikoi (walk/march) starts at the Weymouth Rugby Club and ends with a fun day at the Manurewa Marae Reserve. In between, there will be knowledge shared about local whenua (land), our manu (birds), taiao (environment) and te reo (language).
Once at the reserve, tangata (people) will learn about the area’s rich history, marae and people, and enjoy a community led hauora (health) market.
“This kaupapa (philosophy – way of doing things) gives us a chance to interact at an event designed to celebrate the unique place Māori hold in Manurewa.”
The board has already obtained feedback at the recent Totara Park Challenge and will do so again at the Rewa Run at Mountfort Park on 28 March from 8.30am-12.30pm.
“It’s great to be able to hear from people when they are out and about in the community but anyone can share an idea or feedback at our online site,” Allan says.
Local board consultation enables boards to prioritise the key outcomes, initiatives and projects of most value to their communities.
Each local board drafts its plan for 2020-2023, for publication at the end of this year. The plans include areas for the boards to concentrate on, and ensure they meet community needs.
