A Challenge to Energy Minister Simeon Brown

0

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

As the holiday season unfolds, the liquidation of SolarZero looms over New Zealand’s solar energy landscape. Equity Solar Brokers, a leading solar broker, is raising the alarm on the implications of this development in our advancing solar industry. We believe this is a wake-up call for consumers and policy makers alike, highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable, long term plan to help develop New Zealand’s residential solar sector.

SolarZero’s Sudden Withdraw

In a move reminiscent of the Grinch who stole Christmas, Blackrock, one of the world’s largest asset managers, pulled the plug on SolarZero just as the festive season approached. Despite acquiring the company for a reported $100+ million in 2022, Blackrock’s decision left over 160 employees jobless and contractors unpaid, casting a shadow over the holiday spirit.

Blackrock’s investment in SolarZero, while significant for the company, was a relatively minor component of their extensive portfolio, likely accounting for less than 0.001% of their total assets under management. So, why did they invest into solar in the first place? They saw an opportunity, but one of our insider sources at SolarZero suggests Blackrock didn’t understand the B2C business model and the need to hit scale.

“BlackRock had invested as Australiasia is predicted to have the biggest need for power infrustructure going forward – EVs, smart homes etc. NZ doesn’t have the money to fund these upgrades. BlackRock invested for the long term, our contracts don’t break even til around year 10. We were never cashflow break even, and were only forecasted to from June. They had never invested in a B2C business before. Honestly, I don’t think they spent enough time in the business to understand the intricacies, nor the complexities. Their messaging was always that they were supportive so to end in such a way was truly shocking” – SolarZero on Blackrocks withdraw.

New Zealand vs. Australia: A Comparative Look at Solar Uptake

Equity Solar Brokers analysis indicates that New Zealand’s solar market possesses immense potential but lags behind its neighbor, Australia. Currently, solar power is installed by a mere 2.5% of New Zealand’s households, with over 600 installations being completed each month. In contrast, Australia boasts a solar penetration rate exceeding 30%.

Kiwi’s often comment that Australia’s uptake was primarily due to government subsidies. This statement carries merit, but misses the point.

Australia installed solar at an immense pace for one reason only. That reason – it made sense. Aussie’s saw the ‘no-brainer’ case for solar, where solar systems saved enough energy annually to pay for the upfront cost in as little as 3 years. The question is; is NZ on the same path, where solar energy enters the ‘no-brainer’ category?

For New Zealand to truly embrace a sustainable energy future, a multi-faceted approach is essential:

Government-Led support: The NZ Government should be rallying behind already existing initiatives, such as those proposed by rewiring Aotearoa to level the playing field for consumers installing solar on their home or business. Furthermore, policy frameworks should be tailored to New Zealand’s specific environmental and regulatory landscape, make it affordable and affordable for Solar Rooftop installs.

Scaling insights: “No-brainer” funding methods exist. Like usual, NZ isn’t lacking in great ideas! Awareness is our challenge, as we haven’t yet reached the tipping point.

The opportunity: Over the next 25 years, most households will incur over $100,000 in energy costs. We must be empowering kiwis to take ownership of their energy costs.
It’s all well and good to remember to turn off light switches and dial down the temperature on hot water cylinders, but there’s a lot more that can be said for empowering each individual and their wider community on how solar can save them money, keep them connected in a power outage, and accelerate NZ on it’s race to 100% renewable.

Long-Term Investment Strategies: Investors with a genuine commitment to sustainability can create lasting change. With rooftop solar dropping in price, energy costs on the rise, and fixed yields on the way down, now is the time for investors to allocate time and energy to exploring the positive returns of solar.

Equity Solar Brokers calls on Energy Minister Simeon Brown to lead the charge in developing a comprehensive plan for solar energy in New Zealand, specifically with a focus on rooftop solar, as distributed generation decreases our need for longer term grid infrastructure investment.

Further to policy and support, we suggest a two-fold increase to solar-export restrictions, which will enable larger residential rooftop solar installations.

If subsidies are considered, we suggest a subsidy only for solar batteries, which is a double edged sword approach to increasing both energy generation and storage.

We challenge the Minister to craft a strategy that prioritizes local investment and innovation over reliance on overseas funds with conflicted motives. By fostering a homegrown solar industry, New Zealand can secure its energy future, ensuring that the benefits of solar adoption are felt by all Kiwis.

Mastering Your Auckland Move: Effortless Furniture Removals

0

Source: Press Release Service – Auckland

Hiring expert Furniture Removals Auckland services can make all the difference in your moving journey. Professional movers have the expertise to handle everything from bulky sofas to delicate antiques. They understand the intricacies of Auckland’s traffic patterns and residential areas, ensuring that your belongings arrive safely and on time.

Choosing seasoned Auckland movers means you’re entrusting your possessions to people who prioritize care and efficiency. They come equipped with the necessary tools and packing materials, reducing the risk of damage during transit. Plus, their familiarity with the city allows them to navigate any obstacles that might arise, such as narrow streets or limited parking spaces.

Essential Tips for a Smooth Moving Experience

Start Planning Early
Initiating your moving plans well in advance is crucial. Begin by creating a timeline that outlines all the tasks you need to accomplish before moving day. This might include sorting through belongings, scheduling with movers, and notifying utilities of your change of address. Early planning reduces stress and helps ensure that no detail is overlooked.

Declutter Your Space

Moving is the perfect opportunity to assess what you truly need. Go through each room and decide which items you want to keep, donate, or discard. By decluttering, you minimize the volume of items to move, which can save time and reduce costs. It also makes setting up your new home much more straightforward.

Invest in Quality Packing Supplies

Protecting your belongings during the move is essential. Use sturdy boxes of various sizes, bubble wrap for fragile items, and strong packing tape. Don’t forget to secure valuable items with extra padding. Proper packing materials not only safeguard your possessions but also make loading and unloading more efficient.

Organize and Label Boxes

Clearly labeling each box with its contents and the room it belongs to will save you a lot of hassle when unpacking. Consider using a color-coded system or numbering each box and keeping an inventory list. This organization helps both you and the movers know exactly where everything should go in your new home.

Communicate with Your Moving Team

Maintain open lines of communication with your chosen Auckland movers. Provide them with all the necessary information, such as access points, parking availability, and any large or unusually heavy items. This transparency allows them to prepare adequately and ensures the moving process goes smoothly.

Timing Your Move Wisely

Auckland’s weather can be quite variable, so it’s wise to consider the season when scheduling your move. Aim for periods with milder weather conditions to avoid potential delays or complications. Additionally, booking your move during off-peak times, such as weekdays or outside of holiday seasons, might offer more flexibility and better rates.

Settling into Your New Auckland Home

Once you’ve arrived at your new residence, take the time to familiarize yourself with the neighborhood. Explore local cafes, parks, and shops to make the area feel like home. Remember, the physical move is just the beginning of your new adventure in Auckland.

Kiwi Entrepreneur Launches Campaign to Tackle Secondhand Trading Scam Risks in New Zealand

0

Source: Press Release Service

SellWise, an innovative online marketplace for New Zealanders, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMe to introduce a safer, user-friendly, and trusted platform specifically tailored for Kiwis buying and selling secondhand goods. Motivated by the millions lost to scams annually and outdated trading platforms that fail to meet user needs, SellWise’s founder Tom Filmer is committed to transforming New Zealand’s secondhand market.

Inspiration Behind SellWise

Filmer’s vision for SellWise began with his own frustrations while selling second hand bike parts online. The process was time-consuming and plagued by generic messages that led to wasted time. “It was that moment when I questioned whether it was worth it, especially for the lower-value items – but it needs to be,” said Filmer. “Philosophically, it shouldn’t be this hard to buy and sell secondhand goods in New Zealand, known as ‘recommerce.’”Tom continues, “If we go back 10, even 20 years, buying and selling secondhand goods was simple—a handshake meant something and it was generally easy. Today, technology has opened up opportunities for both good and bad. However, the lack of local competition in this space has resulted in platforms with features that fail to support users effectively and allow scams to flourish.”

Progress So Far

Since late 2022, Tom has been steadily developing a prototype for SellWise. Through extensive research, key learnings, and participation in New Zealand’s Accelerator program, Founder Catalyst, he’s achieved a prototype stage now ready for full development. “I’ve resourced and funded this to date simply because I’m passionate about this change, but we’ve reached a point where additional resources are essential,” explained Tom. “What got us to this stage won’t take us to the next level, so a different approach is needed.”

Why Now?

Single corporate-owned platforms have dominated New Zealand’s market, imposing high fees, outdated features, and limited innovation. “There’s been no incentive for product development in a monopoly or duopoly, which has left Kiwis frustrated with the overall experience of recommerce services,” commented Tom.

SellWise is leveraging advanced technology to address these challenges. AI-powered tools will streamline the listing process by generating suggested pricing, titles, and product descriptions based on uploaded images. Additionally, AI-supported identity checks will improve security, giving users more autonomy and confidence in their transactions. With the recent rollout of open banking in New Zealand, SellWise plans to offer instant, in-app transactions with buyer protection, integrating seamlessly with users’ banking systems to provide a safe, modern marketplace experience.

Unique Approach to Recommerce

“Without trying to sound too ambiguous, we’re not here for drop-shippers, e-commerce stores, or new items,” explained Tom. “There are plenty of options for online purchasing, from small locally made products to giants like Temu and AliExpress—we’re not trying to be everything to everyone.”

Tom emphasises that SellWise’s purpose is to remove barriers to buying and selling secondhand goods in New Zealand. “We live in a world where consumption is increasing, and single-use or disposable items are trending up,” he explained. “If someone has something that could have a second life, it should, but today, it’s often easier for Kiwis to dispose of it.”

“I can’t easily change everyone’s buying behaviour,” Tom joked, “but if we can make secondhand buying and selling easier, especially with the rising cost of living, it could provide families with either a little extra income or an affordable way to find quality items. Future generations also win, with our landfills just a little bit less full.”

The Future of SellWise

SellWise is at a turning point, requiring further resources to fully realise its development. “SellWise is bigger than me. If we’re serious about impactful change, we need backing, and crowdfunding is a way to mitigate risk for those who want to support this vision,” explained Tom.

“We’re seeking Kiwis who believe there is a better way to buy and sell secondhand goods. For just $10, supporters can back this vision and receive six months of free access at launch or a money-back guarantee if SellWise doesn’t succeed. For those unable to contribute financially, joining the waitlist on our website is a free way to support our mission while we secure larger investor funding.”

Clean Planet to Reduce Plastic Waste

0

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

Clean Planet, New Zealand’s leading nationwide cleaning and property services franchise company, today announced the launch of its Sustainable Packaging Programme, a major initiative to reduce plastic waste by reusing and recycling jerrycans across its franchise network.

Starting on November 1st, Clean Planet will eliminate single-use plastic jerrycans by introducing a system where used containers are returned to its manufacturer, AWS Group, for cleaning and reuse. After multiple cycles, the jerrycans will be recycled by Pact Group, contributing to Clean Planet’s goal of becoming a zero-waste company.
“This programme reinforces our leadership in sustainability and sets an example for other businesses to follow,” said Tony Pattison, Chief Executive of Clean Planet.

Partnerships for Sustainability
Recognising the need for a more sustainable solution, Clean Planet partnered with AWS Group to clean and reuse the jerrycans multiple times. “We’re able to repurpose the containers several times, significantly cutting down on waste,” said Richard Hanna, Group General Manager at AWS Group.
Once the containers reach the end of their lifecycle, Pact Group recycles them, turning them into resin for new plastic products. “This process keeps plastics out of landfills and gives them a new life,” said Elaine Tippett, Sourcing and Logistics Manager at Pact Group.
To ensure smooth operations, Clean Planet also partnered with Post Haste to manage the collection and delivery of the used containers back to AWS Group. “It’s exciting to be part of a project that combines practical benefits with environmental responsibility,” said Mark Goeschl, Business Development Consultant at Post Haste.
Sustainability Builds Trust and Opens New Opportunities
Clean Planet’s Sustainable Packaging Programme comes at a time when businesses across New Zealand are increasingly prioritising sustainability. The initiative allows franchisees to actively reduce plastic waste, aligning with the growing demand for eco-friendly practices.
“Our clients appreciate the steps we’re taking towards a greener future,” said Pam Castillo, Master Regional Franchise Owner in Auckland. “It benefits both our customers and the environment.”
By adopting responsible practices, businesses can build trust with clients and attract eco-conscious partners, strengthening their market reputation.

A Commitment to a Sustainable Future
“As we continue to grow, our vision of becoming a zero-waste company remains central to everything we do,” concluded Tony Pattison, Chief Executive. “Our approach to sustainability goes beyond business strategy—it’s about ensuring a better future for our clients, franchise partners, and the environment.”

About Clean Planet
Clean Planet is a leading national cleaning and property services franchise company, helping New Zealanders build successful businesses within a framework of support, guidance, and growth. Offering services such as cleaning, grounds care, car valet and carpet & floor care, Clean Planet empowers franchisees with a sustainable business model that focuses on environmentally responsible practices and innovation.

The ‘Ansum Pasty Co. Launches ANSUM.NZ, Bringing Authentic Pasties to Aotearoa

0

Source: Press Release Service – Auckland

The ‘Ansum Pasty Co. is proud to announce the launch of its online store at ansum.nz, making handmade Cornish pasties accessible to customers across New Zealand. This exciting development follows overwhelming interest from British expats and Kiwis alike, many of whom discovered the hearty satisfaction of a proper pasty during their travels or served up by their grandparents.

“Customers choose us because they know a pasty will leave them satisfied, no questions asked,” says Adam Rickett, Head Crimper and Director at The ‘Ansum Pasty Co.

Adam’s journey to pasty perfection is rooted in his extensive culinary background. As the former Executive Chef at Euro Bar and Restaurant and Culpeper in Auckland, Adam has worked in some of New Zealand’s most renowned kitchens, including The Matterhorn, Pravda Café and Grill, and The Boatshed Boutique Hotel on Waiheke Island. Since moving to New Zealand in 2009, Adam’s dedication to fine food has earned him widespread respect within the industry.

The idea for The ‘Ansum Pasty Co. was born during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. “I wanted to deliver a taste of the past, and not just my past or the past of those from Cornwall, but everyone’s past.” Adam believes that anyone who tries an “‘Ansum” will find something familiar they can relate to. “The magic of the pasty is all in the pastry…It’s the smell. Even if you’ve never been to Cornwall, somehow a pasty really speaks to you and it creates an experience. Everyone should experience that.”

The online store, launched last week, offers nationwide delivery, allowing more New Zealanders to enjoy these handmade, traditional pasties. The response has already been overwhelming. “The interest we’ve seen has been incredibly encouraging,” says Jamie Armour, Business Development Manager for The ‘Ansum Pasty Co.

Jamie brings his own stellar credentials to the venture. A former chef who worked at L’Atelier Joel Robuchon (2 Michelin Star) in Paris, Jamie now serves as the IT Manager for Hell Pizza. Despite his busy schedule, Jamie dedicates his time to helping The ‘Ansum Pasty Co. grow. “Together, Adam and I have the right mix of skills to make this work. Pasties will be a thing in New Zealand!” Jamie says.

For Adam and Jamie, this isn’t just a business—it’s a passion project rooted in sharing a part of their heritage and craft.
Customers can order online now at ansum.nz or visit The ‘Ansum Pasty Co. every weekend at the Catalina Bay Farmers Market. Other Auckland market locations are listed on their website. Gift vouchers are also available, making them a perfect Christmas gift for family and friends.

Auckland’s Go-To for Professional Furniture Removals

0

Source: Press Release Service

Why Choose Auckland’s Trusted Furniture Movers?

Moving can be complex, especially when handling cherished furniture and heavy items. That’s where seasoned movers come in – they’re equipped with both the know-how and the right equipment to transport your items securely across Auckland, whether you’re moving from a compact flat or a spacious home. Experienced movers understand the city’s layout and are prepared to handle both narrow pathways and large furniture without hassle. Relying on a skilled team allows you to settle comfortably while leaving the hard work to professionals.

Essential Steps to Prepare for a Move in Auckland

Start Planning Ahead

Preparation is the key to an efficient move. Begin by creating a detailed plan that includes everything from booking your movers to setting up a packing schedule. A well-organised checklist can help streamline each stage, ensuring that your move with a Furniture Removals Auckland team goes smoothly.

Declutter Your Space

Before the packing process begins, take time to sort through your belongings. Moving can be a great opportunity to let go of items that no longer serve you. Consider donating or selling anything that might add unnecessary weight to the move – a lighter load makes unpacking faster and keeps moving costs down.

Invest in Quality Packing Materials

Sturdy boxes, reliable packing tape, and padding materials are essentials. Packing items securely not only protects them during transit but also gives you peace of mind. Professional movers often offer packing services too, ensuring that every item, from fragile glassware to bulky furniture, arrives intact.

Clearly Label Each Box

Labelling boxes with both contents and destination rooms can make the unpacking process incredibly easy. With clearly marked boxes, movers can place everything in the right spot at your new home, allowing you to settle in with less fuss.

Keep Open Communication with Movers

Discussing your specific needs and any concerns with the moving team helps ensure a smoother experience. Informing your movers of fragile items, special requirements, or preferred loading and unloading areas gives them a clear understanding of your needs, resulting in a move tailored to your expectations.

When to Schedule Your Move for the Best Results

While Auckland’s climate can vary, planning your move for a drier time of year can help avoid weather-related complications. Additionally, choosing a weekday move or an off-peak time could lead to greater flexibility with dates and potentially lower rates. Experienced Auckland Movers will advise on ideal timings and offer tailored scheduling to meet your needs.

Trusting Professionals to Handle Your Move

Moving doesn’t have to be a complicated or exhausting experience. With experienced furniture movers, you’re assured of quality handling, safe transport, and support at every step. Whether it’s a local move within Auckland or a journey to another North Island destination, Furniture Removals Auckland services provide reliable assistance for any transition.

Professional movers handle the logistics, from disassembling and packing large items to placing them precisely where you want at the new location. With their help, you can focus on settling into your new environment, while they handle the details.

New Zealand Government refuses NGO calls to back end to secret WCPFC Compliance Processes

0

Source: Press Release Service

The New Zealand Government has officially responded to a letter from NGO Accountability.Fish demanding the participation of observers in the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) compliance processes and to end the practice of conducting key meetings behind closed doors. In his response, Hon Shane Jones, the Minister who holds the portfolio responsible for fisheries and related international matters, has refused to intervene at the upcoming WCPFC General Meeting to allow observer involvement in the full compliance monitoring process

Accountability.Fish, a global non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the transparency and accountability of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), has raised concerns for some time over the lack of transparency within the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC).

On 9 September 2024, the organization sent letters to and publicly named 17 member states—including New Zealand—that refuse to allow observers into the full Technical and Compliance Committee (TCC) meeting where key sustainability data is reviewed and confirmed.

“New Zealand has a reputation as a country of laws with a commitment to international law. But its failure to stop WCPFC secrecy actually contradicts it’s obligations under the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement (UNFSA). The tone of the ministry’s response reflects a particular cavalier attitude towards those obligations and shames New Zealand,” said Ryan Orgera, Accountability Fish’s Global Director.

Despite previous calls for transparency, WCPFC remains the only tuna RFMO that continues to exclude observers from important sections of key meetings, particularly those where draft compliance reports are produced.

New Zealand’s response, delivered on behalf of the Rt Hon Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Rt Hon Winston Peters, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Shane Jones, Minster for Oceans and Fisheries, clarifies the Island nation’s position that the decision to allow observers to participate in the WCPFC compliance monitoring process lies solely with the WCPFC and that decisions within the WCPFC are typically made by consensus among its members.

“The lack of transparency stands in direct violation of several international agreements, including the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, to which New Zealand is a signatory. Article 12 of the Agreement clearly stipulates that “States shall provide for transparency in the decision-making process and other activities of subregional and regional fisheries management organizations,” Orgera added.

“Furthermore, the WCPFC’s actions are inconsistent with key international frameworks, including the Rio Declaration, the Aarhus Convention, the Almaty Guidelines, and the Escazú Convention, all of which call for the involvement of civil society in environmental decision-making processes.

“New Zealand citizens need to understand the gap between the country’s reputation as a leader on environmental issues and international law and its actual behavior. It’s time to walk the talk Orgera concluded.

Accountability.Fish is a global initiative committed to increasing openness and accountability in international fisheries decision making. It is funded by the Oceans Five Foundation.
