Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will travel to India next week, visiting New Delhi and Mumbai.

Mr Luxon will be accompanied by one of the largest delegations a New Zealand Prime Minister has ever travelled with, comprising senior New Zealand business leaders, a community delegation of prominent Kiwi Indians, representatives from across Parliament, and the Ministers for Tourism and Hospitality, Trade and Investment, and Ethnic Communities: Hons Louise Upston, Todd McClay and Mark Mitchell.

“Since coming into office, I have signalled that strengthening our relationship with India is a key priority for my Government,” Mr Luxon says.

“We’ve already made incredible progress over the last year as we invest in building a broad-based, sustainable relationship with India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy, and the place from which six per cent of New Zealand’s population claim their heritage. I hope my visit will further strengthen the close links between us.”

While in India, Mr Luxon will meet with Prime Minister Modi to explore areas of cooperation, deepen political and security ties and strengthen the economic relationship.

“India is an important power in the Indo-Pacific and I will discuss with Prime Minister Modi what more we can do together to maintain peace and prosperity in our region.”

India is the fifth largest economy in the world and is expected to become the third largest. Mr Luxon says travelling with a senior business delegation will help increase trade and business opportunities and promote New Zealand as an investment destination.

“The large and growing Indian diaspora make significant contributions to New Zealand. I am pleased to be travelling with a first-of-its-kind community delegation, to highlight the importance of the people to people links we share, and to profile the best and brightest among Kiwi-Indians.”

Mr Luxon will give the inaugural address at the Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier defence and security dialogue. He will also travel to Mumbai to meet with senior business leaders.

“New Zealand’s relationship with India is more important than ever at this time of geopolitical uncertainty. I am confident my visit will achieve a step change in our engagement, as we continue to strengthen our mutual security and prosperity,” Mr Luxon says.

Mr Luxon and the delegation will depart New Zealand on 15 March.

Open for business: new funding to attract international business events

0

Source: New Zealand Government

The Government is investing an additional $3 million from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy to secure more business events for New Zealand, Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says.

“On top of my recent Tourism Boost announcements for a new Australia campaign and a regional fund, we’re giving business events a boost.

“We know business event participants spend $175 more per day than other visitors on average, and importantly they often visit in the off-peak period between March and November.

“This funding will allow Tourism New Zealand to increase their annual conference bid development from 90 to 110 bids, attract high-value incentive programmes, and enhance New Zealand’s presence at key international trade events.”

The additional activity aims to secure business events for New Zealand that will deliver more than $30 million in incremental spend to the economy.

“This is a chance to showcase our new conference facilities, fantastic hotels, and experiences, and pitch New Zealand as a world class location for business events.

“To boost conference visitor numbers, it makes sense to supercharge the Conference Assistance Programme work that is already happening in Tourism New Zealand.”

The funding is available to any organisation, including universities, to bid to host an international conference in New Zealand. Support is also available to attract high-value incentive business to New Zealand.

This funding is part of the Tourism Boost package, developed by the Government in partnership with industry to support immediate growth in visitor numbers, drive export activity and deliver economic growth.

“My message is clear, New Zealand is open for business and we are looking forward to welcoming more business visitors soon,” Louise Upston says.

Green Party launches petition to allow Pacific whānau visa-free access

Source: Green Party

The Green Party is launching a petition calling on the Government to extend visa-free travel to visitors from Pacific Island nations.

“Aotearoa is part of the family of Pacific nations, and we must remove unfair barriers to entry for our Pacific whānau,” says Green Party spokesperson for Pacific Peoples Teanau Tuiono.

“We are a Pacific nation, as will be shown by the rich cultural expression and coming together of peoples at this weekend’s Pasifika festival in Tāmaki Makaurau.”

“Despite our country’s many bonds with the region, people from Pacific countries have to jump through bureaucratic hoops to get a visitor visa approved, and often see their visas unfairly declined.”

“Visitors from 60 countries are currently able to access Aotearoa without a visa – not a single one of those countries is a Pacific Island country.”

“Our petition calls on the Government to demonstrate that Aotearoa values our relationship with Pacific countries, and start to build an immigration system that values community, connection, and fairness.”

“The Green Party wants to give our whānau, āiga and communities certainty to visit Aotearoa,” says Teanau Tuiono.

Overnight works to connect temporary road for SH22 Paerātā roundabout construction

0

Source: New Zealand Transport Agency

Overnight stop/go and lane changes on State Highway 22 between Pukekohe and Paerātā Rise got underway last night, as NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) contractors complete works to connect a temporary road bypassing construction of the SH22 Paerātā roundabout.

Work to connect the temporary road to the existing state highway will take place overnight between 9pm and 5am through to Thursday (14 March) under stop/go traffic management.

People will still be able to travel in both directions during the works. However, road users are encouraged to plan ahead and expect delays.

Northbound traffic will move to the new temporary road first, followed by southbound road users.

A 50km/h speed limit will be in place on the temporary road during roundabout construction.

The new single lane roundabout will enable access to the future Paerātā Railway Station and new housing developments. It’s one of several infrastructure upgrades in the area to future proof for the estimated population growth of 120,000 people in South Auckland over the next 30 years.

This temporary bypass road allows the roundabout to be built offline without significant disruption to people and freight travelling on SH22.

Please be patient and treat our crews with kindness and respect. Reduce your speed, adhere to the temporary speed limits and follow the traffic management directions at our work sites.

This work is weather dependent and there may be changes to the planned works in the case of unsuitable weather. Please visit the NZTA Journey Planner website (journeys.nzta.govt.nz(external link)) for up-to-date information on these works, including any changes due to weather.

Construction of the SH22 Paerātā roundabout is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

NZTA thanks everyone for their patience while we complete this important work.
