Chow:Hill Architects Completion of Te Kete Aronui Rototuna Library

0

Source: Press Release Service

Inspired by the challenge to strengthen the heart of Hamilton’s Rototuna neighbourhood, Chow:Hill’s design, undertaken in partnership with Designwell and AECOM, has woven the rich cultural heritage of the local whenua into the contemporary aesthetic of the building. Chow:Hill was also able to work collaboratively with Hamilton City Council as its client and Te Haa o te Whenua o Kirikiriroa and Ngaati Wairere from early Concept Design to develop meaningful and considered design narratives.

Phillip Kempster, Chow:Hill Senior Principal and Senior Architectural Technician, said the integrated design reflects the natural environment of Rototuna’s wetlands, but has been combined with modern design practices to create a community asset fit for future use.

“Connection has been a central design principle of this project. We wanted to connect the site’s history with modern day development of the new Rototuna town centre, and we wanted to connect the interior of the building with the exterior landscape, encouraging users of the facility to spend time both indoors and out,” explains Kempster.

Sam Thomas, Chow:Hill Principal and Registered Architect, said the construction material chosen for the library enabled that connection to come to fruition.

“The use of Corten steel in the library’s entranceway was chosen for its compatibility with the building’s natural timber look which evokes a feeling of warmth,” Thomas explains. “The folded acoustic ceiling is also a key design element as it reflects the patterns more commonly found in weaving and the building’s high ceiling has created a large, open, space which maximises natural light.”

The area’s former wetland status also manifests itself in the design of the library’s interior. “Te Kete Aronui is the basket of knowledge, and within the library there are islands of books and wayfinding techniques that mimic wetland walkways. We wanted to preserve the heritage of the site and bring the outdoors in,” Thomas said.

Chow:Hill’s design of the outdoor space, which includes bike and car parks, a playground, skatepark, and village square, also reflects the cultural heritage of the landscape.

“Last year, we celebrated our 30th year in business and, although our work isn’t only in Hamilton, it’s been a privilege to design Te Kete Aronui Rototuna Library for the community in which Chow:Hill first began,” said Kempster.

New Children’s Book Series Inspires Personal Development and Mindset for Young Readers

0

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

Mental Skills NZ, a coaching organization specializing in mental performance, is excited to announce the release of an immersive children’s book series focused on personal development. Co-authored by mental performance coach Wilton Atkins and his wife, pediatric occupational therapist Merryn Atkins, the series aims to empower children aged 3 to 9 with positive mindsets and instill strong principles for flexible and empowered thinking.

Recognizing the lack of personal growth resources tailored specifically for children, Wilton and Merryn decided to take action when they became parents. They noticed that many children’s books employed language and messages that were unhelpful and disempowering. Motivated to make a difference, they created a series of books that would provide uplifting and empowering narratives for young readers.

The series consists of four books, each featuring a key principle woven into a delightful and rhyming narrative, ensuring an engaging and age-appropriate reading experience. These principles are specifically designed to complement and enhance the previous books, nurturing the growth of well-rounded individuals.

Book 1, “Ted & Tilly learn an ancient power,” guides children to understand the significance of personal responsibility for their actions and encourages them to take pride in their efforts rather than solely focusing on outcomes to promote intrinsic motivation.

In book 2, “Ted & Tilly and the great discovery,” children are introduced to the concept of understanding that different people have diverse perspectives or mental maps, fostering empathy and emotional intelligence.

Book 3, “Ted & Tilly face a storm,” encourages children to develop self-awareness, resilience, and determination in the face of challenges, teaching them that they have the power to influence their emotions and bounce back.

Finally, in Book 4, “Ted & Tilly and the strange behaviors,” children learn about emotional intelligence by recognizing and understanding the positive intentions behind others’ actions, even if it’s not always obvious.

“We firmly believe that children can grasp these concepts at a young age, and, in my opinion, these four concepts are vital and often lacking in adults,” shared Wilton Atkins, author and owner of Mental Skills NZ. “Through our book series, our aim is to empower children with essential beliefs that will enable them to navigate challenges, build resilience, develop empathy, and cultivate emotional intelligence.”

The children’s book series has gained popularity among teachers and parents. The books serve as valuable resources for creating lesson plans or sparking meaningful conversations centered around each theme. Wilton says “most schools are already doing great work around promoting healthy mindsets, for example our son’s current school has a core disposition called ‘self management’ and our book series complement and enhance these types of messages”.

The “Mental Skills NZ Children’s Book Series” is available at select retailers and can also be purchased online at www.mentalskillsnz.com. These books offer an excellent opportunity for parents, teachers, and caregivers to engage children in discussions about personal development and support their overall growth.

DC Equipment Acquires Madill Brand

0

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

With a rich, impactful history dating back to 1911, Madill will now have a new lease on life after being acquired by DC Equipment last month. Ownership of the Madill brand, which is synonymous with cable logging across the globe—and is known to loggers across North America—has changed hands through a range of multiple ownership structures, from competing manufacturing equipment companies through to international investment groups over the last several decades.

Former owners Nicholson Group had owned Madill since 2011 and incorporated its equipment line-up into their current operation, including the manufacturing of their own debarker equipment range.

“On behalf of Nicholson, we are delighted to announce the sale of the Madill brand of forestry equipment manufacturing rights to DC Equipment,” said John Jennings, Director of Capital Sales for Nicholson Manufacturing.

“After a successful and fruitful relationship with our agents and distributors, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for their unwavering support over the past decade,” said John.

“Their dedication to sales, parts, and service has been instrumental in reinforcing the Madill brand’s reputation for reliability and performance in the forestry industry. We have the utmost confidence that DC Equipment and agents will continue to provide customers with outstanding products and services. We look forward to the future growth and success of the Madill brand under DC Equipment’s stewardship.”

The owner and founder of DC Equipment, Dale Ewers, who is also a logger in New Zealand, has had a connection with the Madill brand dating back 40 years. “It was a childhood dream to own a Madill tower yarder,” says Dale. “Madill is known for its durability, ability to perform and longevity, which is important in this industry—and those strong equipment features align with our current brand, Falcon.”

Dale believes adding the Madill brand and intellectual property under the DC Equipment manufacturing umbrella provides an opportunity to achieve the company’s mission of “creating a safer and more productive steep-slope logging industry throughout the world,” and also opens up additional benefits to other industries.

Dale sees this as a stepping stone to not only helping the forest industry progress but also providing customers with the solutions they need. “We’re not here to be the biggest manufacturer; we’re here to provide the best solution for our customers,” he says.

While more will be disclosed soon, Dale was quick to mention that Madill will always be Madill: “There’s history, heritage and a heck of a lot of customer loyalty there that needs to be recognized.”

“We don’t plan to reinvent Madill products—we believe there’s tremendous heritage, and the Madill machines work exceptionally well in steep slope ground. However, we do see an opportunity to integrate some of DC Equipment’s current and future technology and innovation.”

Madill by the Numbers—an Impressive Track Record
• Over 3,000 Madill yarders have been produced
• The Madill brand has been in operation for over 100 years.
• Madill currently has machines across the world, with prominent coverage in North America and New Zealand

With a mission to create a safer and more productive steep-slope logging industry after a series of incidents affected the forest industry, Dale Ewers started DC Equipment to mechanize and de-risk the environment of steep-slope logging operations. Since 2010, DC Equipment has been a manufacturer of a range of steep-slope logging equipment, under their Falcon brand. The range, including motorized grapple carriages, winch assist machines, yarders, and camera systems, has been a popular option for logging contractors working in steep-slope terrain.

With over 1,000,000 operational hours across the product lines and zero harm, DC Equipment is now looking to provide logging contractors across the world with a more integrated solution by including automation, data capture, and a transition into lower-emission machinery—and, now, with the addition of the world-renowned Madill brand.

• Current Madill customers can still receive parts and servicing through their current channels.
• Updates on the Madill acquisition will be posted on DC Equipment’s and Madill’s website and social media.
• If you’re interested in information on how to become a Madill stockist or distributor, please contact DC Equipment via the DC Equipment website.
