Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that bridge strengthening work will begin next week at the Whatiwhatihoe Bridge south of Pirongia on State Highway 39, with traffic reduced to one lane while scaffolding is installed under the bridge and the site is safely prepared.

Stop/Go traffic control will be in place from 31 October to 11 November for the scaffold installation. In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, this may be postponed.

Once scaffolding is installed, the strengthening works will likely take around 8 months and are expected to be completed around mid-2023. Generally, traffic will not be affected during this period as work can be carried out from beneath the bridge, however traffic management and a temporary speed limit will be place.

Visit the interactive Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website for the latest information on roadworks, traffic, road closures and detours to help plan your trip.

Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience.
