Petdirect, New Zealand’s leading online pet retailer, is expanding into new territory with two more physical stores set to open in Mt Roskill, Auckland and Tower Junction, Christchurch. This follows the success of its first brick-and-mortar store in Takapuna, launched in October 2024.

The company, which recently celebrated its fifth birthday, has grown rapidly from a pandemic-era startup into a market leader in the online pet supply space. Its move into physical retail runs counter to wider retail trends and reflects a reverse approach to the traditional model – starting online and building out into stores.

Founded in March 2020 by GrabOne’s Shane Bradley, Petdirect secured backing from Pencarrow Private Equity in early 2024 to accelerate its goal of becoming New Zealand’s top pet retailer across all channels.

“This isn’t just another store opening; it’s the next chapter in our customer-focused growth strategy,” says CEO Dave Anderson. “While many retailers are consolidating or closing physical locations, we’re listening to what Kiwi pet parents want – the convenience of online shopping complemented by immersive, expert-led in-store experiences.”

This expansion comes amid economic pressures affecting many parts of New Zealand’s retail sector, with rising inflation and reduced consumer spending. But pet care remains an outlier. The category has proven resilient as spending on pets tends to stay strong, even during downturns.

“The bond between Kiwis and their pets creates a remarkably resilient market,” explains Anderson. “When pets are family members, their care becomes a non-negotiable expense.”

That resilience is already delivering positive outcomes at home. Petdirect now employs over 100 people across the country, including a locally based customer care team. The company is leveraging its Kiwi-owned status and insights into the local market to deliver experiences tailored for New Zealand pet owners.

The new retail locations will include click-and-collect services, interactive elements such as a pet treat bar, and curated selections of high-quality pet products. The company’s Pet Perks loyalty programme provides members with consistent pricing across both online and in-store purchases. Its “endless aisle” solution means if something isn’t available on the shelf, customers can order from Petdirect’s extensive online catalogue while in-store and have it delivered – often by the next day in metro areas.

“Being Kiwi-owned means we make decisions right here, with a genuine understanding of local pet parents’ needs,” says Anderson. “Our physical stores will embody the same commitment to expertise, quality, and service that has driven our online success, while creating meaningful connections within local communities.”

Further strengthening its local credentials, Petdirect’s partnership with Air New Zealand’s Airpoints™ programme lets customers earn rewards on purchases made in-store or online.

Looking ahead, the business plans to expand its retail footprint nationally, with the Mt Roskill and Tower Junction locations forming just part of a wider rollout.

“The future of retail isn’t online or offline – it’s the seamless integration of both,” Anderson emphasises. “Our stores aren’t just sales channels; they’re powerful community hubs, and centres for building trust through face-to-face expert advice. They enhance our online business, and our online strength supports the stores.”

This omnichannel approach is designed to meet the expectations of today’s shoppers, who want flexibility, connection, and expert help – whether browsing in person or buying online.

Media Release 30 April 2025.

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

Eli grew up with a unique perspective. His mum, Siobhan, has the genetic mutation that marks out neuroendocrine cancer, which causes cancerous tumours to form at any time. Siobhan, whose drive to help others with her condition saw her start the Unicorn Foundation New Zealand, says her uncertain health means a “question mark” hangs over the family.

Eli’s giving ethic — coupled with a cryptocurrency obsession and an entrepreneurial streak a mile wide — has resulted in NFTees, T-shirts with a twist. Each shirt features a digital artwork created by a celebrity, and with each sale, buyers receive an NFT (non-fungible token) of the artwork, with half the T-shirt profits donated to the celebrity’s chosen charity.

An NFT is a digital asset that represents real-world objects: like art, music, or videos. Bought and sold online, they’re an increasingly mainstream part of the online landscape.

“I wanted to do a physical product,” Eli said. “T-shirts are easy to print, and they’re visible, not like socks and underwear.”

The first artist Eli convinced to get on board was basketballer and Heart Kids NZ ambassador Tom Abercrombie. Abercrombie, who has played 13 seasons with the Breakers and is the club’s all-time leading scorer with over 3,500 points, has a young daughter with a heart condition that requires a pacemaker. As an ambassador, Abercrombie has spent the last two years giving back to the organisation that has supported his family on their heart journey.

Heart Kids NZ is the only organisation in Aotearoa NZ dedicated to supporting people with heart conditions through childhood and into adulthood.

Chief Executive Dr Ruth Gorinski, said Eli’s generous gesture would help Heart Kids NZ in their drive to support families at the most difficult time in their lives.

“We’re immensely touched by Eli’s generous idea, and his partnership with Tom Abercrombie,” Gorinski said. “Eli’s entrepreneurial initiative demonstrates a committed heart to our charity and absolutely exemplifies our Heart Kids values. We are so grateful to Eli for his selfless support.”

Online gift retailer Giftbox Boutique has raised $17,864 for the I Am Hope charity through their pre-Christmas donation drive. Every year leading into the Christmas period, Giftbox Boutique runs their red ribbon campaign.

The red ribbon campaign offers customers the option to replace the standard black ribbon with a festive red ribbon for an additional $1. Giftbox Boutique then matches all these donations resulting in a $2 donation for every gift box that leaves their depot with a red ribbon.

This year the company set a goal to make this red ribbon appeal their most successful to date. They managed to blow last years’ donation out of the water, doubling their collection from 2020.

The 2020 red ribbon appeal saw an impressive $8,804 raised for the SPCA.

“We are over the moon with the results of our 2021 red ribbon appeal”, says Giftbox Boutique Director, Katie Gray. “Being able to double our donation from last year is a real testament to our supportive customer base”.

The 2021 red ribbon appeal varied slightly from past appeals. In the past, the company left it up to their Facebook followers to vote on the chosen charity for that year.

“We were a little worried that removing the voting aspect could hurt our chances of raising a large sum. After such a testing year, we wanted to contribute to a charity that contributed to supporting Kiwis with their mental health. I am Hope was the perfect fit”.

“We are so happy that our lovely customers felt the same way and really threw their support behind it”.

The next ribbon appeal from Giftbox Boutique will commence in the lead up to Mother’s Day and will be available on the purchase of all Mother’s Day Gifts.

On Monday 17th January 2022 Custom Branded stopped branding all non-filter cotton face masks and suggested other branders do the same.

With recent reporting scoring some cotton face masks blocking as few as 26.5% of particles Custom Branded has stopped selling all other brands they once stocked, effective immediately. “Our own supplied masks have always had filter pockets however we were also using several other brands under the impression they were significantly more effective than they are,” says Daniel Sharp of Custom Branded.

The remaining variant supports pm2.5 filters, which are available from various outlets and can be replaced with surgical mask material cut to shape at a push.

With a pm2.5 filter cotton masks are reported as blocking up to 60% of particles or more, beating out surgical masks which block 38.5%. However Daniel stresses that “fit is also extremely important, with surgical masks, simply knotting the loops will tighten the fit and enhance the performance,”.

Even though Custom Branded’s own offering can be effective when paired with a filter, they are now advising clients who spend periods of time in high risk areas to swap out to n95 or p2 masks. They have previously published an article to help those with home made masks to improve their level of protection however are advising anyone with a filter incompatible mask to move to a different mask as soon as practicable.

About Custom Branded

Custom Branded are commercial branded apparel suppliers that work with businesses New Zealand wide and do not supply packs or single masks.

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

“We shine the light on the best New Zealand has to offer in terms of fresh ingredients, transformed into outstanding cuisine, exceptional wines and beverages, our spectacular scenery captured by so many memorable tourism experiences, yet as nation, we still struggle to understand and tell this story”, comments Celia Hay, director of the New Zealand School of Food and Wine.

With NZQA approval for 13 micro-credentials, the New Zealand School Food and Wine hopes to inspire and attract new people to jobs in hospitality, wine and tourism and also enhance wider community understanding of our food and beverage story. “We export food and wine to the world, yet pride in this achievement is often lacking by our own communities,” say Hay.

Crisis

“There is a crisis right now because job-seekers, including school leavers, are being pushed into other industries especially the building trades. There is a perfect storm of government incentives paid to employers, along with negative counsel from career advisors and families warning young people off seeking careers in hospitality and tourism. This is resulting in a critical lack of workers.

“In developing this suite of short, part-time micro-credentials that range from classic cooking to food and beverage history to food costing and digital marketing, we are seeking to inspire people to dip their toes into our sector, even if they are currently working or studying elsewhere.

“In addition, these micro-credentials enable people already employed to develop new skills and craft new talents but also to signal that this career pathways is valid, diverse and on-going. Just look at our food heros, like Peter Gordon and Annabel Langbein, now in their 60s, with a tremendous backstory.

“From the various lockdowns, we know that people find joy in cooking and that people are curious to develop new talents in the kitchen; that wine and cocktails are cool and fun; that an important part of any tourism destination is the food and beverage offering whether as a winery cellar door experience or paddock to plate cuisine,” says Celia Hay

Online Options

Online study options are embedded in a many of the short programmes, enabling people from around the country to study about New Zealand wine or learn how to write an electronic newsletter or find out more about our food history.

“The micro-credentials are equally suitable for the consumer; the food and wine lover who just wants to learn more. In building broader community understanding and respect for the food and beverage culture of Aotearoa-New Zealand inevitably we will see more people attracted to work in our sector. That is the shared goal of these new programmes,” comments Celia Hay.

VWO, the experimentation platform used by fast-growing brands the world over, recently announced a partnership with 10XL, an Auckland-based team of marketing veterans that helps eCommerce brands in New Zealand and Australia grow through data-driven insight.

New Zealand (NZ) as a market has great enthusiasm, and entrepreneurial spirit. There is untapped potential in the country’s ability to adapt and improvise with available resources. There is also a gap in the understanding of growth hacking, in reality, this has more to do with creating effective messaging and value proposition and less with spending a large amount of money on building a new website. Currently, an average CMO’s relationship with the board may not be persuasive enough to get the budget sanctions needed to test ambitious ideas.

The NZ market thus presents a wide scope of opportunities – what is required is the realigning of expectations around which Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) tactics work in the local context.

The strategic partnership between VWO and 10XL is positioned to bridge the gap and help brands allocate resources to meaningful experiments.
While VWO puts marketers one step ahead of conventional experimentation tools, 10XL brings in the expertise to drive long-term performance for eCommerce brands. Together they are placed strongly to help NZ brands grow sustainably and profitably.

“We’re excited to partner with 10XL and confident that together we will be able to deliver CRO solutions that appeal in the local context to NZ brands and help marketers build a sustainable culture of experimentation in their organisations. VWO brings ease into experimentation that allows clients to weave a complete picture of their users to create delightful digital experiences. Add to this what 10XL brings to the table – strategic marketing expertise coupled with data insights and the know-how on what works in the NZ market – and it’s a win-win offering for potential clients in the region.”, says Sparsh Gupta, CEO, Wingify.

Through this partnership, 10XL aims to be of service to established NZ brands looking to optimise their performance through a ‘test and learn’ approach. They want to build not just better websites but help build better marketers and high-growth kiwi brands that compete successfully on an international stage.

“We see ourselves as the consumer experts in the local NZ market. The marketing mix that works in NZ very rarely works internationally, so we help teams understand and quantify that difference – VWO’s global reach, mature testing experience, and exceptional support will serve as the icing on a very delicious 10XL cake. The fact that VWO is a tightly integrated stack is the cherry on top. As marketers, we surround ourselves with so much digital complexity, it’s refreshing when a software partner like VWO comes along to help simplify that.”, says Christopher Andrew, Managing Director, 10XL.

About 10XL
10XL is part digital marketing agency, part eCommerce insights studio. They connect the dots between ideation and delivery for their clients and put customer experience ahead of any specific platform needs. They help brands drive long-term revenue growth by improving marketing activity across the entire customer lifecycle through research, data, and strategy. Their competitive advantage lies in their partnerships and collaboration with market-leading digital platforms, thinkers, and implementation specialists. The team’s diverse eCommerce expertise has helped brands in 20+ countries generate more than 100 million in online sales.

About VWO
VWO helps 2500+ brands in more than 90 countries create and deliver digital experiences loved by their customers. It is a connected platform that offers insights into visitor behaviour, planning and A/B testing capabilities, and easy deployment of changes – all within the same environment. Conversion rate optimisation experts trust VWO to perform data-driven A/B testing on their products and apps.

Traditionally, those in the market for new jewellery, engagement rings, and wedding rings could spend hours, if not days, browsing jewellery stores looking for the ‘perfect’ piece without knowing what they truly desire. Diamonds.co.nz is attempting to make that a problem of the past by ensuring those in the market for diamonds could access an exclusive service that helped them narrow down their options.

According to spokesperson name here, their ‘book a consultation’ service was designed to make jewellery buyers feel at ease in an unbiased and pressure-free environment when receiving help with the purchasing process.

“We know how daunting it can be to shop for jewellery in a store with other customers and salespeople when you’re not sure what you want or need extra help. By booking a consultation, we can talk about your options one-on-one, whether that includes trying on a full range of signature ring settings or looking at custom design options.”

Name here says that consultations are available at all COVID-19 alert levels, with modifications made to suit the current level.

“During alert levels three and four, we offer convenient virtual consultations. When we can open safely, we provide in-person consultations with diamond and jewellery experts at our Auckland CBD and Pukekohe locations for convenience.”

A tall, handsome boy with moustaches, Kurta Pajama & Jalsa…

What could be a better recognition of a Punjabi Gabru????

Obviously, The Gabru’s of Punjab are known for their Kurta, Pajama, and jalsa/jutti outfits all over the world.

Kurta is a long knee or below knee length upper wear that has a slit from either side below the waistline and comes with a full sleeve which is usually rolled up till the elbows by the Gabru’s of Punjab.

Actually, it’s their style.

A kurta paired with loose and flared pajama/ bottoms are the most appealing look to people of Punjab, but you can also pair your Kurta with a nice pair of jeans or lungi to experiment with your looks.

Style up with Jalsa

Jalsa is the famous Punjabi jutti that is made of leather and is one of the most comfortable footwear of all. It is embellished with either gold or silver or both threads that make it look festive and can also be worn during festivals or weddings. The most intriguing and unique feature of the Jalsa is that it has no left or right specifications. It can be worn on either foot.

Gabrus prefer Jalsa with Kurta Pajamas to get a cool look.

Significance of kurta pajama and jalsa for punjabis

Kurta, pajama, and jalsa is the traditional outfit of Punjabi Gabru and is a representation of Punjabi culture. No matter how far in time we have traveled, we are always rooted in the places we belong to.

Hence, even if Punjabis are not regular with traditional outfits because of professional outfits and busy life, they will always need them during the festivals or any time they wish to feel connected to our culture. The entire outfit is the most comfortable choice for the Gabru’s, and it represents Punjab in every part of the world.

Ecowool is pleased to announce they are now stocking a 100% pure merino wool range, available now at ecowool.com. It joins new possum merino products for the current season.

According to Ecowool spokesperson Karen Collyer, the new range consists of wardrobe staples that are perfect for all year round, such as polo necks, crew necks, jackets, and cardigans.

“We feel investing in quality basics is key to pulling your wardrobe together,” she says.

All garments in the range feature fine rib merino, a lightweight merino to be worn on its own or as a base layer during cooler months with jackets and cardigans. They are also described as being breathable, soft against the skin, sustainable, and biodegradable.

“In the southern hemisphere, winter is fast approaching. The key to staying warm during the cooler months is layering your clothing.”

Layering to remain warm has never been easier, thanks to the natural garment selection that Ecowool has to offer. While their thermal range of undergarments has long been a popular option for base layering, the new merino range offers that convenience, as well.

“If you prefer a more versatile option than our fine merino undergarments, our pure merino range of wardrobe staples can be worn as a base layer or as outerwear throughout the year.”

Karen also recommends pairing the pure merino staples with a knit jacket or sweater featuring possum merino silk. Not only will it provide warmth, but durability, insulation, and odour resistance, too.

You can then tie the entire look together with gloves, a scarf, a beanie, socks, and even sheepskin boots.

“We’re excited about this new 100% pure merino range, but we also can’t wait to share with you the many beautiful natural products we believe will work in harmony with the range.”

Find out more about the new pure merino range by visiting Ecowool.com today.

About Ecowool
Ecowool is based at Sheep World, an outstanding establishment in New Zealand dedicated to sheep farming and wool production.
By 2021, it is expected that over 2.14 billion people will buy goods and services online. Diamonds.co.nz has now added a convenient new feature to its online diamond and jewellery purchasing process to get ahead of the trend.

Diamonds.co.nz offers online shoppers the opportunity to create custom engagement rings and jewellery using diamonds that suit their preferences. Previously, they had to scour through several diamonds for sale to find those that were available in New Zealand offices for immediate purchase.

Now, the jewellery and diamond provider allows you to shop by what’s readily available to speed up the purchasing process.

Diamonds.co.nz spokesperson Paul Bunker says they have always prided themselves on offering a convenient diamond purchasing process, but they are pleased they can now make it even easier.

“We have always allowed our shoppers to select a diamond based on its shape, colour, clarity, carat, price tag, and ID. But being able to offer a search function for diamonds purely available in New Zealand is a feature we’re very proud of. We hope our New Zealand customers can shop for their new engagement ring or wedding ring with more confidence.”

For more information on Diamonds.co.nz or to start shopping, visit www.diamonds.co.nz.

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, Waterware identified a need for high-performing, premium products that could meet a variety of health and safety challenges in the commercial, health, scientific, hospitality, and industrial sectors.

With a forward-thinking approach combined with innovative technology and environmental sustainabiity, GENTEC provided the answer: commercial plumbing fixtures manufactured using high-grade stainless steel that help maintain a healthy and hygienic working environment.

Waterware spokesperson Rob Scholtens says that researchers have long been investigating how plumbing fixtures like basins and taps could spread infectious bacteria and superbugs, especially in hospital environments.

“GENTEC identified several risk infection factors with many standard plumbing setups, then set about providing products to combat them in a variety of environments. From biofilm buildup to bacteria around the basin and floor drains that allow bacteria to enter habitable spaces, there is lots of room for improvement.”

“We’re proud to offer GENTEC products that combat these problems, like basins with rear-offset waste, basin grate seals, smart technology, and anti-microbial materials. Ensuring all workers wash their hands properly will never be possible, but hygienic plumbing fixtures can certainly diminish the risk of infection and workspace contamination.”

The GENTEC range is available exclusively from Waterware, and includes an extensive range of products for high-risk industries and workplaces; such as health and aged care facilities, clinics, research facilities, public facilities, food preparation and dining establishments, manufacturing plants, and more.

Phone 0800 WATERWARE to speak with Rob Scholtens, Commercial Space & Healthcare Manager to find out more about the GENTEC range and how their products can be suitable for your next commercial project.

Source: WalkWorthWeb

With another winter behind us, Kiwis will be itching to get back outside. Whether it is a barbeque on the deck or a night out at the Auckland viaduct, outdoor dining is a big part of our social lives.

Winter is traditionally a tough time for the hospitality sector, and with this year’s lockdowns and restrictions, the winter of 2020 may be one to forget. As the weather begins to warm up, bars and restaurants will be looking to attract patrons and pack out their premises.

The disruption to business has forced many business owners to look for creative ways to attract punters post-lockdown. One of these tactics has been making outdoor more attractive and comfortable.

“We have seen a significant increase in orders from bar and restaurant owners across the country”, observed Kelvin Davis, owner of the local N.Z. outdoor heating manufacturer, Kelray Heating. “Outdoor heating is a great way to expand the useable space of a venue”.

Davis has been supplying commercial outdoor heating products to N.Z. businesses for decades and believes many business owners are looking to ensure their venues can thrive during the pandemic era.

“We have seen many bars and restaurants overseas; in places like L.A. and the U.K., be restricted to outdoor dining only. With the virus being much less transmissible outdoors, and patrons feeling safer outside, a lot of N.Z. venue owners have been investing in their outdoor spaces”, says Davis.

The U.S. has already seen a massive surge in demand for outdoor heaters, with major retailers Amazon and Wayfair seeing a 70% increase in patio heater sales. While Davis has not seen any panic buying of Kelray’s products, sales of their heaters are notably higher, particularly among business owners. Davis believes outdoor dining may prove to be the solution for keeping the hospitality sector afloat, particularly with the uncertainty of new virus clusters.

“New Zealand bars and restaurants have had a little more time to prepare and observe what has worked overseas”, says Davis. “Social distanced outdoor dining appears to be the best solution, moving forward. It allows businesses to remain open while minimising the risk of transmission, even as clusters come and go”.
