Rueben Sharples, owner of The Aussie Butcher New Lynn, is proud to share that his team has picked up six medals at the 2025 100% New Zealand Bacon & Ham Awards, including three shiny Golds for their standout bacon and ham.

This prestigious competition celebrates New Zealand’s finest pork goods, with eight bacon categories and three ham categories judged by a panel of culinary experts.

Aussie Butcher New Lynn’s 2025 medal winners

GOLD
• Reuben’s Dry Cured Middle Eye Bacon
• Reuben’s COB Ham
• Reuben’s Boneless Loin Ham

SILVER
• Reuben’s Middle Free Range Bacon
• Reuben’s Traditional Streaky Bacon

BRONZE
• Reuben’s Boneless Ham

With 254 entries from 44 butchers across the country, all using high-quality, NZ-grown PigCare™-accredited pork, this was no small feat. To be recognised alongside the country’s best is a huge honour for the New Lynn team.

A win for craftsmanship and care

Behind every rasher and ham is a process Reuben has honed over the years: a commitment to traditional techniques, locally sourced ingredients and uncompromising attention to detail. His dry-curing methods, carefully balanced brines and slow-smoking process are all about bringing out rich, natural flavours, not masking them.

For Reuben, winning these medals is more than just a pat on the back. It’s a celebration of the small details and the dedication of his team. It’s recognition that quality and consistency matter, and that care makes all the difference.

Heartfelt thanks

Reuben extends his heartfelt thanks to his hardworking team who “bring their A-game every day”, and his loyal customers who continue choosing to support local.

“These awards are for the people behind the counter and the community in front of it,” he says. “We’re incredibly proud, and if you haven’t tried our bacon or ham yet, now’s a great time. You’ll taste the difference.”

Media Release 1 August 2025.

Known for its focus on bathrooms only, Alchemy Bathroom Renovations Auckland has built a strong reputation in Central, West, and North Auckland over the past several years. The company says extending its operations south and east is a natural next step.

“Many homes in South and East Auckland are now reaching the age where bathrooms are due for major repairs or layout improvements,” said a company spokesperson. “We’ve received a consistent stream of enquiries from those areas over the last year, so the time was right to widen our reach.”

The company specialises in complete bathroom renovations, including demolition, waterproofing, plumbing, tiling, electrical work, and installation of modern fittings. Alchemy Bathroom Renovations Auckland also manages council compliance requirements for larger structural changes and offers practical advice for clients with older homes or investment properties.

In recent months, the business has seen increased interest in accessibility upgrades and cost-conscious renovations focused on long-term durability rather than premium design features.

The expansion will be supported by the onboarding of additional trades and project managers to maintain consistent timeframes across all regions. The team emphasised that clients in the new service zones will receive the same personalised quoting process and project support the company is known for.

Homeowners in South and East Auckland can now request in-home consultations and quotes via the company’s website.

Source: Press Release Service

While 2025 has presented economic challenges for many industries across New Zealand, some local businesses are defying the trend, and they are doing it online. From boutique retailers to service providers, those with strong, well-optimised websites are not just surviving, but thriving. The key to their success lies in building a digital presence that prioritises visibility, user experience, and search performance.

Businesses that invested early in their websites and SEO strategies are now reaping the rewards. One company leading the way is The Web Guys, a digital marketing and web design agency based in Auckland. Their client base spans the country, and many have achieved significant growth by focusing on search engine optimisation and intuitive web design.

According to Alon Olah, General Manager, having a robust online presence is no longer just an option. “Businesses with a strong SEO foundation and user-friendly websites are pulling ahead,” says Olah. “In times like these, it’s not always necessary to outspend your competitors, you just need to outrank them.”

As economic pressures mount, many New Zealand businesses are becoming more strategic about where they direct their marketing budgets. Rather than relying on traditional advertising methods, the most successful brands are focusing on digital assets that offer long-term value, starting with their websites.

“We have seen clients increase conversions by over 40 per cent simply by making their websites faster, easier to navigate, and clearer in their messaging,” says Krish Gounder, UX/UI Designer at The Web Guys. “People are short on time. If your website is slow or difficult to navigate, visitors will likely leave. If it is intuitive and optimised for search, they will stay, browse and buy.”

The Importance of Being Found

In today’s crowded digital landscape, visibility is essential. A beautiful website may impress, but if it’s not ranking on the first page of Google, it might as well not exist. This is where search engine optimisation (SEO) becomes vital to success in 2025. “The businesses that are doing well online are not always the biggest,” Olah explains. “They are the ones appearing at the top of search results when people are actively looking for their services or products. That visibility is not accidental; it comes from having SEO built into the foundation of the website.”

Gounder adds that good design is inseparable from performance. “Google rewards websites that people engage with. If users bounce immediately without interacting, your search rankings will decline. UX is no longer just about how things look; it’s also about how they function. It directly affects how well your site performs in search engines.”

Real Growth for Kiwi Businesses
Throughout the country, businesses that focus on building strong websites and implementing effective SEO strategies are now benefiting from consistent leads and stronger brand recognition.

From trades businesses in Tauranga to e-commerce stores in Wellington, Olah shares that The Web Guys’ clients are seeing growth in organic traffic, improved customer engagement, and higher conversion rates. One property-sector client experienced a 95 per cent increase in organic enquiries within six months of launching their new SEO-focused site.

“We build scalable digital solutions,” says Olah. “That means websites that do more than look great. They deliver results on Google, work seamlessly on mobile, and contribute to measurable business outcomes.”

Moving Forward in 2025
In a year where every investment must count, digital strategy has become a priority. Businesses that are succeeding online in 2025 are those that understand the value of long-term digital assets. By focusing on search visibility, fast-loading pages, and user-friendly navigation, they are building resilience in uncertain times.

“Having a strong online presence is no longer optional,” says Gounder. “Your website is your storefront, your sales assistant, and your reputation all rolled into one. If it is not working for you, then you are missing out on opportunities.”

As more New Zealand businesses look for ways to adapt to the current climate, those already performing well online are offering a clear model for success. The formula is straightforward: prioritise SEO, focus on user experience, and build a digital presence that works hard every day. “We are not just creating websites,” says Olah. “We are helping Kiwi businesses position themselves for long-term growth.”

North Otago’s beloved Chook Tree has been crowned the winner of the 2025 Tree of the Year New Zealand. Chosen by public vote from a shortlist of six finalists, the quirky, chicken-shaped macrocarpa captured the nation’s imagination and topped this year’s record-breaking poll.

Shaped as much by nature as by imagination, this one-of-a-kind tree has delighted passersby for nearly 50 years with its unmistakable resemblance to a giant hen. Originally damaged in a storm in 1978, the tree’s unusual silhouette caught the eye of local poultry farmers Norman and Evelyn Clarke. Rather than remove it, they carefully shaped what remained—coaxing out a feathery, full-bodied form that has since become a beloved regional landmark.

More than just a quirky tree, The Chook Tree is a celebration of creativity, resilience, and the charm of the unexpected. Its story clearly struck a chord—Otago voters got behind their local legend in large numbers, securing the win by a comfortable margin.
This year’s competition saw the highest level of public engagement since the award began in 2022, with spirited voting across all six finalists. The runner-up was the much-loved Rangiora Borough School Redwood; another tree deeply embedded in its local community.
The Tree of the Year campaign is organised by the NZ Notable Trees Trust and proudly sponsored by Delta. Each year, the campaign celebrates outstanding trees that are part of New Zealand’s cultural and natural heritage—trees that shape our communities and stand as living landmarks.

Brad Cadwallader, Trustee of the NZ Notable Trees Trust, said:
“This year’s result shows just how much New Zealanders love a great story—and a tree with real personality. While all six finalists were remarkable in their own right, there was something about The Chook Tree’s quirky shape and down-to-earth origin that really struck a chord with the public. It’s a reminder that trees don’t have to be ancient or enormous to be meaningful—they just need to make us smile, spark curiosity, or remind us of who we are. This tree did all three.”

Tree of the Year New Zealand is an annual celebration of the country’s most loved and remarkable trees. Run by the NZ Notable Trees Trust, the contest invites public nominations from across Aotearoa, with six standout finalists selected each year for their significance, character, or unique story. Voting takes place throughout the month of June, giving New Zealanders the chance to show their support and help crown a tree that holds a special place in our national landscape

For more information on The Chook Tree and other historic and notable trees in New Zealand, please visit the NZ Tree Register at www.notabletrees.org.nz

Ripyl®, a New Zealand innovative educational platform redefining how business and commerce are taught in schools, has been named Best Startup at EDUtech 2025, winning the prestigious Shark Tank Competition at one of the world’s largest EdTech events.
Over two action-packed days, more than 11,000 educators, innovators, and industry leaders gathered at the ICC Sydney to explore new ideas, hear from global voices, and celebrate the future of education. Ripyl stood out from a strong field of 48 companies, with 26 pitching live to a panel of judges, including impressive finalists like Well-Nest, Lima AI, and Gradeo.

The judges recognised Ripyl for:
• A well-established, practical model already impacting classrooms across New Zealand, Australia, and nine other countries.
• Demonstrated readiness for global scale, grounded in real-world use and feedback from educators and students.
• A clear commitment to quality, with resources co-designed alongside teachers and validated directly with students to ensure relevance and accuracy.

“In a space increasingly dominated by AI-driven content, Ripyl stood out by keeping educators and learners at the centre,” said Dave Craig, Ripyl’s Founder. “Our modules aren’t auto-generated by AI. They’re built by teachers, shaped in classrooms, and informed by the students we serve. This is EdTech redefined, a platform built with and for teachers, and one that never forgets who education is really for, our students!”

Founded in 2019 in New Zealand, Ripyl provides curriculum-aligned, ready-to-use resources, from lesson starters and case studies to design thinking challenges and extended projects, giving teachers practical tools to engage students with real-world business challenges. By empowering young learners to develop critical thinking, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindsets, Ripyl is shaping the next generation of business leaders.
The conference also featured a dynamic panel discussion on entrepreneurial thinking in the classroom, where Dave Craig joined Dr. Hugh Chilton (ScotsX) and Jeanette Tran (STEM Reactor) on the Innovation Stage. The conversation emphasised the importance of teaching students how to lead, fail fast, and build resilience through real-world experiences, critical thinking, and creativity.

“Australia gets EdTech,” Craig added. “Sydney is a global hub for educational innovation, and winning Best Startup here isn’t just a milestone, it’s a validation of our approach and our commitment to growing deeper roots in this key market.”

Ripyl extends special thanks to EDUgrowth and Terrapin for curating an exceptional conference, and to all the educators, leaders, and EdTech partners who made EDUtech 2025 an unforgettable experience. As EDUgrowth shared:

“Founded in 2019, Ripyl® is revolutionising how business and commerce are taught in schools by providing practical, hands-on learning experiences… Congratulations to Dave Craig and the entire team for their groundbreaking vision and commitment to shaping the future of education through innovation.”

Looking ahead, Ripyl remains committed to building high-quality, relevant resources that are fact-checked, human-centered, and grounded in the realities students face, ensuring every learner has the opportunity to build skills for tomorrow’s world.
As Craig concluded, “AI will continue to be part of what we do, but it will never replace the human connection that makes education powerful. The biggest wins are still ahead. Just like us Kiwis, kangaroos can fly too!”

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Google Ads is transforming the digital marketing landscape, enabling businesses to optimise ad performance with greater precision targeting, efficiency, and highly personalised ad experiences for their customers. At Auckland-based digital agency The Web Guys, this powerful combination is already driving exceptional results for clients across a range of industries.

“AI has revolutionised how we approach Google Ads campaigns,” says Cuong Phan, Google Ads Specialist at The Web Guys. “With machine learning powering smart bidding and dynamic ad creation, we’re now able to target the right audience at the right time and maximise return on investment (ROI). This is essential when the customer’s shopping journey is no longer linear.”

AI-powered tools, such as AI Search Max, Smart Bidding Strategies, and AI Studio, enable businesses to enhance key content assets, from ad copy to AI-generated images and videos, making it easier to optimise campaigns with minimal manual input. Machine learning algorithms constantly analyse real-time data, adjusting bids and targeting based on the likelihood of a conversion, ensuring budgets are spent more effectively.
In addition to targeting efficiency, AI-driven campaigns have demonstrated performance uplifts of up to 27%.

By automatically generating ad copy combinations and tracking performance, businesses can fine-tune their messaging for maximum impact. This level of precision ensures that ads remain highly relevant to consumers’ evolving needs.

“We’re not just using AI for automation – we’re integrating it in ways that ensure both our customers and the team are at the heart of the process,” explains Sam Raines, who leads AI integration at The Web Guys.

“What sets us apart from other agencies is our ability to embrace cutting-edge and advanced technology while still maintaining strong human connections. AI helps us work smarter, but it’s the relationships we build that drive real value. We never lose sight of the fact that behind every campaign is a person, a business, and a vision.”

In a world increasingly shaped by technology and automation, The Web Guys believe that maintaining a personal touch is more important than ever. Rather than replacing their team, AI enhances their capabilities, freeing up time to focus on creative strategy, client communication and campaign innovation.

With predictive analytics, AI can forecast future campaign performance, allowing marketers to make data-backed decisions about ad spend, creatives, and target audiences. Google Ads’ AI-driven insights make it easier to measure and refine campaigns in real time, empowering businesses to stay ahead in an ever-competitive digital environment.

“We’re seeing real-time results that not only meet but exceed our clients’ expectations,” adds Phan. “AI isn’t replacing the creativity of our team; it’s enhancing it, giving us the ability to refine our strategies and campaigns at lightning speed, all while ensuring that each ad is aligned with the customer’s needs and goals.”

At The Web Guys, the fusion of AI and Google Ads is unlocking new possibilities for businesses across Auckland and beyond, driving growth, innovation, and measurable success. By combining cutting-edge technology with a customer-first approach, The Web Guys are positioning themselves as a leader in AI-driven digital marketing solutions across Auckland and beyond.

Cancer patients across New Zealand are facing a painful reality: many of the latest, most effective cancer and rare disease treatments are either not funded by PHARMAC or come with a price tag that puts them out of reach. That’s where Medspartner comes in as a global access platform that’s helping New Zealanders source safe, high-quality medications from trusted overseas suppliers at a fraction of the local cost.

Through legal personal importation, Medspartner supports patients and their families to bring in the medicines they need, with one-on-one guidance, transparent pricing, and full delivery support.

“We work with people who are running out of options,” says Aayyush Goyal, Founder of Medspartner. “If a drug isn’t funded here or is too expensive to buy privately, we help patients find safe, affordable alternatives from internationally certified suppliers, and we make the process simple.”

Why It Matters
In New Zealand, patients often wait years for PHARMAC to fund breakthrough cancer drugs. In urgent or advanced cases, time is a luxury. Medspartner bridges that gap by:
Sourcing approved generics and branded medicines from WHO-GMP certified facilities

– Providing personal consultations and quotes
– Handling prescriptions, customs, and door-to-door delivery
– Ensuring transparency and ethical access every step of the way

Legal and Patient-Centred
New Zealand law permits individuals to import up to three months’ supply of prescription medicine for personal use, as long as it’s not a controlled substance. Medspartner operates fully within these legal frameworks, while encouraging patients to work closely with their doctors.

“We don’t replace your doctor – we work alongside your care team to help make sure treatment is affordable and uninterrupted.”

For Patients and Whānau
Medspartner supports not just individuals, but families navigating a tough diagnosis. Whether it’s a parent seeking treatment for a child, a caregiver balancing bills and hospital visits, or a survivor looking to prevent relapse, the platform offers human support alongside logistical help.

Patient Voices and Advocacy
Medspartner is also building a global patient advocate network, where Kiwi voices are welcomed. Survivors, caregivers, and clinicians are invited to share stories, mentor others, and raise awareness about access issues facing New Zealand’s cancer community.

To learn more or speak with a patient guide, visit www.medspartner.com.

As winter sets in across the country, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are once again grappling with the seasonal downturn. Yet, while foot traffic slows, the digital marketplace remains wide open, and increasingly, it is where New Zealanders are spending their time.

Sam Raines, digital marketing expert at Auckland-based agency The Web Guys, says the seasonal lull presents not just a challenge but a strategic opportunity for business owners to upgrade or build a professional website.

“We’re seeing a clear shift in consumer behaviour. People are more inclined to shop from home during the winter months,” says Raines. “For many businesses, their website has become the front door. It’s where customers go first.”

Act Fast: Tax Return Deadline Approaching

The New Zealand Inland Revenue Department allows website development and digital marketing costs to be claimed as business-related expenses. In other words, businesses investing in a professional online presence can claim back a portion of those expenses when they file their tax return. However, time is of the essence, for filing business tax returns is just around the corner, due by July 7, 2025.

Erin Tan, Accounts Manager at The Web Guys, highlights the financial and operational timing advantages of undertaking digital projects during the winter months.

“It’s often a quieter time operationally for a lot of SMEs. That makes it ideal for focusing on digital upgrades,” says Tan. “It’s also right before many businesses start preparing their annual financials, so the timing aligns well with taking advantage of the deduction.”

Outdated Websites Are Holding Businesses Back

While many SMEs understand the importance of a digital presence, not all websites are created equal. Raines notes that a surprising number of businesses still rely on outdated websites that no longer meet modern standards in design, speed or mobile usability.

“The reality is, people are impatient online. If your site doesn’t look trustworthy or work seamlessly, they’ll move on, probably to your competitor,” says Raines.

He adds that today’s websites do far more than display basic business information. They act as digital hubs, connecting customers with products, services, booking systems, contact forms, and payment gateways, all of which operate 24/7. “A website doesn’t clock out at 5pm,” he says. “It’s working for you while you sleep. And that’s critical, especially when the in-store foot traffic just isn’t there.”

Tax Relief Eases the Path to Going Digital

The tax-deductible nature of website upgrades is helping businesses justify the investment. Tan says many clients are unaware of just how much they can claim.
“We make sure our clients have detailed documentation so they can work with their accountants to claim everything they’re entitled to. It makes a big difference.”

The pandemic played a major role in accelerating online consumer behaviour, but the shift shows no signs of reversing. Even now, online shopping continues to grow, not just for retail but also for service-based industries. Customers expect to find and interact with businesses online, whether they’re booking an appointment, requesting a quote or simply looking for information.

A Smart Move Before the New Financial Year

Raines recommends that businesses unsure where to start should begin with a digital audit, an assessment of their website’s performance, content and user experience.

“A poor online experience damages credibility. Your website is often the first impression people get, and first impressions matter,” he says. “Upgrading your site is about staying relevant. It shows you’re engaged, professional and prepared for today’s market.”

Tan encourages business owners to take the plunge before the end of the financial year. “The tax benefits are there, and the market is online,” she says. “If your website hasn’t been updated in a while, or if you don’t have one at all, now’s the time to take that step.”

Ultimately, the message is clear: while winter may be cold and quiet out on the street, the digital world is alive with opportunity.

“Your website is one of the smartest investments you can make right now,” Raines says. “It helps grow your business, and thanks to the tax break, you’re rewarded for doing so. That’s a rare win-win.”

Media Release 28 June 2025.

MediTrain is proud to announce the release of its new First Aid Manual, Edition 5, part of a wider commitment to making first aid training accessible, engaging and effective for all learners across New Zealand.

While a manual might not sound like front-page news, this release reflects something bigger. At MediTrain, we believe that first aid is too important to be treated as a box-ticking exercise. It should be practical, memorable, and inclusive. That’s why we’ve put real investment into ensuring our course materials, including the manual and our suite of training videos, are designed with all kinds of learners in mind.

Whether it’s a high school student doing their first course or a workplace refresher for someone with English as a second language, our goal is to make sure every learner leaves with skills they can recall and use in a real emergency.

The new manual features:

– A layout that matches the course flow for easier learning
– Step-by-step formatting with clear visual cues and practical examples
– Simplified language to support learners of all backgrounds
– Space to add course notes and emergency contact details

“We’ve always believed in the power of good teaching, and that includes good materials,” says MediTrain owner Adrian Brown. “If you want people to remember what to do under pressure, you need to teach in a way that sticks. That means using video, props, real scenarios and course materials that are visually strong and easy to follow.”

MediTrain is a nationwide provider of First Aid Courses in New Zealand, delivering practical, flexible training trusted by schools, businesses, community groups and individuals.

MediTrain’s investment in accessibility also extends beyond the classroom. The range of Mindray AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) includes models with language options, including te reo Māori a feature designed to help remove barriers in emergency situations.

“First aid should be for everyone,” says Adrian. “Whether it’s the course itself or the tools we supply, we want to make sure they work for a wide range of people and communities.”

By combining practical delivery with flexible formats and strong learning resources, MediTrain continues to lead in first aid education that puts people first.

Source: Press Release Service

A new generation of personal safety and medical alarms has officially launched in New Zealand, and it’s putting peace of mind in the palm of every Kiwi’s hand. Mercari Technologies Limited, a locally owned and operated company – launches ‘Familyr – Family Alert & Response Alarm – redefining personal security for seniors, people living with dementia, those with disabilities, and anyone who values safety and independence.

At the heart of the Familyr offering is a simple solution: ‘In an emergency, talk to someone you know. That’s Familyr’. Whether it’s a fall at home, getting disoriented while out walking, or needing urgent help in a misadventure or health emergency, Familyr’s Family Alert Alarms are designed to be a wearable safety device – giving families confidence and care when it matters most.

Designed for Kiwi Lifestyles
What sets Familyr apart is its deeply local approach. Unlike offshore providers or outdated solutions that require landlines or stay fixed to a wall, Familyr devices are designed specifically for New Zealanders and the independent way we live. “We saw a gap in the market — existing solutions were either too technical, outdated, or just not designed with the New Zealand lifestyle in mind,” says Sabastian Guang, Marketing Manager of Familyr. “So we set out to create something better: mobile, discreet, reliable, and smart. A device that can keep up with Kiwi’s, wherever they go.”

The result? A suite of lightweight, wearable safety devices with built-in Personal Alarm, GPS tracking, automatic fall detection, and two-way calling, operating on New Zealand’s mobile networks. There’s no need for additional software, smartphone apps or home WiFi — Familyr’s devices are fully self-contained and work out of the box.

How It Works
Familyr’s Family Alert & Response Alarms, are worn around the neck, wrist, or clipped to clothing. You can even keep it on a keyring, in a pocket or handbag. With one press of the SOS button, users are connected to up to 10 of their own family members, close friends or directly to 111 emergency services. If the Familyr device detects a fall, it can automatically call for help without needing to press anything.

Each Familyr alarm is also GPS-enabled, allowing authorised family members to locate loved ones simply by sending the Familyr alarm a special coded text message — ideal for those living with memory loss or wandering tendencies. All Familyr alarms even include geofencing alerts that notify family if someone leaves a safe zone.

“Feedback from our clients over the years has given us some simple insight. Everyone wants to remain as independent as they can for as long as they can. Families want to give their aging relatives as much freedom as possible whilst having peace of mind that there is a layer of protection available. The technology in Familyr now makes that possible” says Guang.

For many New Zealanders, it’s a literal lifeline.

Built for Dignity, Not Dependence
One of Familyr’s core values is dignity through independence. For older adults who wish to live in their own home longer, or for people with disabilities who value autonomy, Familyr allows them to maintain control over their lives while giving family and carers peace of mind. “Safety shouldn’t come at the cost of someone’s freedom or privacy,” says Guang. “That’s why our devices are designed to be subtle, empowering, and easy to use. No tech expertise needed.”

No Contracts, No Hassle
Unlike many traditional alarm services that require lengthy contracts or installation fees, Familyr is contract-free. Users own, not rent the Familyr device. Equipped with a prepay SIM card, there are no professional monitoring fees as a family network monitors the user and controls the spend. Sebastian Guang states “If you look at the cost of renting a traditional medical alarm vs the Familyr Alarm with all its features included, there is no equal comparison on the market today. Familyr is a smarter technology that’s far more cost effective to own than its rental competitors”

Supporting Dementia and Disability Communities
Mercari Technologies has quickly become a trusted name among carers, occupational therapists, and community support organisations across the country.
“We’ve had incredible feedback from families living with dementia,” says Guang. “Setting a safezone and just knowing that their loved one can be located or get help fast — that’s a potential lifesaver.”

Familyr also supports individuals with autism, epilepsy, chronic illness, or mobility challenges, offering modern features that provide solutions to suit different needs.

A Safer, Smarter New Zealand Starts Here
As we look toward an ageing population and rising healthcare pressures, technology like Familyr’s could be the key to helping more Kiwis live safely and independently at home for longer.

With affordability, simplicity, and smart technology combined, Familyr is more than just a medical alarm — it’s peace of mind for every whānau.
About Mercari Technologies Limited

One week into voting for New Zealand’s 2025 Tree of the Year, and the competition is already taking root in the hearts of Kiwis nationwide and abroad. Run by the NZ Notable Trees Trust, Tree of the Year is a celebration of the iconic trees that shape our landscapes, memories, and communities.

Last month, New Zealanders were encouraged to nominate a single tree that holds special meaning—not a whole species, but one tree with a unique story. The aim? To highlight the deep-rooted connections we share with these living treasures.

Brad Cadwallader, Trustee of the NZ Notable Trees Trust, says the heart of the competition lies in community engagement. “These trees are part of our shared story—they hold our memories, mark our histories, and shape our landscapes. Tree of the Year is about celebrating that connection and recognising the guardians who care for them.”

One of this year’s finalists is Te Herenga Ora—a revered local cluster of tī kōuka/cabbage trees at Burnside High School in Christchurch. Once a vital wayfinding marker through the swamplands of Canterbury, these trees have guided generations. Today, they remain a living symbol of resilience, community, and connection to whenua and are clearly valued.

When Burnside High School first opened, Headmaster Mr. Cross remarked:

“No matter how much the school grows or how many buildings are erected in its grounds, the cabbage trees will be jealously guarded for all time – for staff, students and their families. They are regarded as a landmark pointing the way not only for the students of today but also for the thousands yet to come.”

Voting opened 5 June at www.treeoftheyear.co.nz and closes 30 June. The winner will be announced on 5 July.

Tree finalists
The Fairy Tree, Auckland Domain
St Luke’s Gum, Greytown
Rangiora Borough School Redwood, Rangiora
Te Herenga Ora, Burnside High School, Christchurch
The Phantom Rātā, Lake Ōkataina
The Chook Tree, Waianakarua, Otago

Auckland’s own Fairy Tree, nestled in the heart of the Domain, is currently languishing in last place in the 2025 New Zealand Tree of the Year competition—but there’s still time for a fairy-tale comeback.

The towering Moreton Bay fig, with its sprawling buttress roots and sun-dappled canopy, has been a place of wonder and imagination for generations of Aucklanders. A natural playground and daydreaming spot, it’s a tree that’s been climbed, hugged, picnicked under, and whispered about for more than a century.

“Some trees are admired—this one is experienced,” says Brad Cadwallader, Trustee of the NZ Notable Trees Trust. “If every visitor who’s ever paused to admire this tree voted, it wouldn’t just win—it would win by a landslide.”

So far, the early frontrunner is the Chook Tree—a hen-shaped macrocarpa from Otago. But supporters of the Fairy Tree say it’s time for Tāmaki Makaurau to get behind its leafy local legend.

“There’s no shortage of passion for trees in this city,” says Cadwallader. “Now’s the time to show it.”

The Fairy Tree is one of six national finalists in the 2025 Tree of the Year competition, and the only one from New Zealand’s largest city.

Voting is open to everyone—one vote per person—until 30 June 2025, at
www.treeoftheyear.co.nz

Will the Fairy Tree get the fairy-tale ending it deserves, or will the Chook Tree steal the show?

Most people don’t think of computer repair shops when they think of environmental action. But Computer Help NZ is flipping that assumption like a laptop lid.

In an ambitious 10-year sustainability campaign, Computer Help NZ has launched the 4th of 31 projects designed to halve their carbon footprint—and this one’s a trashy triumph.

We’re talking next-level recycling. Sure, we’ve been separating landfill, recycling, and compost for a while—but now, we’re adding soft plastics and even tricky stuff like polystyrene to the mix. Not to mention the quirky twist: we’re repurposing old lawnmower catchers as sorting bins. That’s right—what once collected clippings now fights for the planet.

“Look, we fix computers, not the ozone layer,” jokes General Manager Matthew Gilling, “but that doesn’t mean we can’t do our bit. This isn’t greenwashing—it’s green doing.”

This initiative is part of a much bigger picture. Computer Help NZ plans to roll out 31 small but mighty environmental projects over the next decade—all while still delivering top-notch laptop and computer repairs to the people of Christchurch.

So next time your PC crashes, you’ll know: at Computer Help NZ, we’ll fix your tech and give the planet a little boost too.

Until Thursday 19 June, New Zealanders are invited to cast their votes for People’s Choice as part of the 2025 100% New Zealand Bacon & Ham Awards – celebrating the tastiest, most expertly crafted pork products made from New Zealand-born and raised pork.

In 2024, Reuben Sharples and the team at Aussie Butcher New Lynn took home the coveted People’s Choice Awards for both Best Ham and Best Bacon, thanks to an outpouring of support from their loyal local fans. Now, they’re back and hoping to repeat their success in a year that promises even stiffer competition.

“In 2024 local fans showed their love for our ham and bacon and voted for us in the 100% New Zealand Bacon & Ham Awards – we won both People’s Choice Awards! We couldn’t have done it without you,” says Reuben.

“The quality of bacon and ham across the country is incredibly high, but we’re proud of what we do and grateful to be in the running again.”

Reuben’s ham is famous for its rich, savoury flavour, perfectly cured and smoked to succulent perfection, while his bacon balances a satisfying meaty bite with just the right level of crispness when cooked.
What sets award-winning ham and bacon apart?
Texture: Ham should be firm yet tender, not watery or rubbery. Bacon should be thick enough to hold its shape and offer a satisfying chew.
Taste: A deep, smoky flavour in bacon and a well-rounded, naturally sweet finish in ham. Not too salty – just rich and flavourful.
Cooking quality: Premium bacon holds its shape and sizzles without excessive shrinkage or splatter. Great ham carves cleanly and retains its juiciness whether baked or served cold.

While the public decides the People’s Choice Awards, the 2025 competition also includes Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals awarded across multiple categories of bacon and ham. Judging takes place over two days, with a panel of respected butchers and culinary experts carefully inspecting, tasting and scoring entries from across Aotearoa – all made exclusively with 100% New Zealand pork.
With voting now open, fans of Reuben and the Aussie Butcher New Lynn are encouraged to once again show their support. Every vote counts in putting their local favourite back on top.

VOTE NOW
Visit www.baconandhamawards.co.nz to vote for your favourite ham and bacon before Thursday 19 June.

Biochar Network New Zealand is delighted to be part of the Forestry Hub again at Fieldays 2025. Giving visitors the chance to explore the many aspects of forestry and wood processing in NZ, the Forestry Hub will showcase the sector’s vital roles in agriculture, construction, energy and carbon management.

Made by pyrolysis of woody biomass or plant residues, biochar is one of few negative emissions technologies (NETs) recognised by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Biochar safely stores up to half the carbon in its source material for hundreds – and even thousands – of years. Biochar is the world’s leading carbon dioxide removal (CDR) method (https://www.cdr.fyi/leaderboards)

In New Zealand and internationally, biochar made from forestry residues is used for a variety of regenerative agriculture applications, saving farmers money, and increasing productivity.

BNNZ Chair, Phil Stevens, is an advocate for biochar research, production and application. “Biochar turns forestry byproducts into a high-value product. As well as building soil carbon, biochar captures nutrients, holds water, mitigates emissions, and improves soil fertility.” Phil also points to the thermal energy released when making biochar, and its potential in generating electricity or providing process heat for industry: “A timber processing business could very easily get three significant revenue streams from a pyrolysis plant: electricity, biochar, and carbon credits on the international voluntary market.”

BNNZ has seen a lot of progress since the 2022 Fieldays with commercial production and sales of biochar expanding around NZ. Southland Carbon have donated a 1000L bag of their premium biochar for a lucky prize winner and BiocharTP will have their new Air Curtain Burner on display.

BNNZ will be demonstrating the principles of pyrolysis & gasification for biochar production over the four days and some of the residual heat will be directed at Forestry Hub sausages. The BNNZ team will also be presenting in the G80 Forestry Hub main stage on biochar production and its applications to agriculture and the natural environment.

For more information about biochar, visit the Biochar Network New Zealand stand at Fieldays Forestry Hub (G80), or online at www.biochar.net.nz

esterday (Tuesday 27 May), Invercargill City Council agreed to commission a staff report on a proposed change to its procurement policy, aiming to exclude companies involved in building or maintaining illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The motion, brought by local residents and members of Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA), was presented to councillors yesterday. “We’re delighted Invercargill councillors have taken this first step,” said one of the presenters. “If this passes Invercargill will become the next New Zealand city helping to end Israeli impunity for human rights violations.”

If adopted, Invercargill would join Christchurch City, Nelson City, and Environment Canterbury, which have already aligned procurement with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334. That resolution, co-sponsored by a National government in 2016, declares Israeli settlements a “flagrant violation under international law” and a major obstacle to peace. It calls on states to distinguish between Israel and the territories it has occupied since 1967.

A similar motion is being prepared for Environment Southland Council.

“Western governments have failed to hold Israel to account. Last year the International Court of Justice ruled Israel’s 57-year occupation itself is illegal and breaches international law on apartheid and racial segregation,” the group member added. “This is a small but important step to ensure we’re not complicit. More must follow.”

Invercargill PSNA spokespersons stressed the proposal is not a sanction against Israel, but a narrow ethical measure.

“This is about local responsibility,” the team said. “We’re grateful to the councillors who showed leadership by requesting the report and giving local residents a say in upholding international law, which protects us all.”

“We look forward to the report coming back to council and urge councillors to stand with cities across Aotearoa to ensure ratepayer funds are spent ethically, and in line with foreign policy.”

The date for the council vote will be set once the staff report is complete.

Media Release 28 May 2025.

By addressing longstanding challenges in the scaffolding industry, Scaffmore offers a user-friendly solution that enhances efficiency, reduces waste, and improves overall productivity.

Bridging the Gap Between Planning and Execution
