1. Labour will crack down on unfair charges on bills
November 8, 2026
Source: New Zealand Labour Party
Labour will stop companies charging loyal customers more, end nasty surprises when deals finish, and ban fake discounts.
“This election is about the cost of living. Household bills have gone up under National, and every dollar counts,” Labour Leader Chris Hipkins said.
“Too often, people who stay with the same phone, internet or insurance company for years end up paying more than a new customer.
“Many find their bills go up when a deal ends, or that a sale wasn’t the bargain it looked like.
“You shouldn’t have to spend hours comparing prices, reading the fine print or changing companies just to get a fair deal. Labour will make sure companies treat their customers fairly,” Chris Hipkins said.
Labour will:
- Stop companies charging loyal customers more: Phone, internet and insurance companies won’t be able to charge longstanding customers higher prices than new customers just because they haven’t switched.
- Stop nasty surprises when deals end: Companies won’t be able to shift customers onto unjustifiably expensive plans when an introductory deal ends, and will have to tell you clearly what you’ll pay and whether there’s a cheaper plan.
- Ban fake discounts: Advertised discounts will have to be based on the lowest price charged for that product in the previous 30 days.
“Some companies save their best deals for new customers, while people who’ve been with them for years pay more,” Labour Commerce and Consumer Affairs spokesperson Arena Williams said.
“Labour will change the rules so companies can’t charge loyal customers more just because they haven’t switched.
“We’ll also stop companies quietly moving people onto expensive plans when a deal ends. They’ll have to tell you clearly what you’ll pay next, and whether there’s a cheaper plan.
“And when a shop says something is on special, it should be a real saving. The Commerce Commission has had to take supermarkets to court over misleading specials. Labour will make it simple: advertised discounts will have to be based on the lowest price charged in the previous 30 days.
“Kiwis work hard. They deserve fair prices, honest deals, and more left over at the end of the week. Labour has a plan to tackle the cost of living and make sure Kiwis get a fair go on their household bills,” Arena Williams said.

2. Luxon’s failed record laid bare
November 8, 2026
Source: New Zealand Labour Party
The last jobs numbers before the election deliver a damning verdict on Christopher Luxon’s economic management, with unemployment climbing again to 5.7 percent, and 51,000 more Kiwis out of work since National took office.
“Three years of Christopher Luxon’s leadership and he’s made everything worse. His last chance to show his plan was working has come and gone, and Kiwis are paying the price,” Labour finance and economy spokesperson Barbara Edmonds said.
“For working families, the pressure hasn’t let up. The cost of living is still biting, bills are piling up and wages are struggling to keep pace.
“Young people are being hit particularly hard, with 91,000 or one in seven young people not working, studying or training. It’s no wonder so many are looking overseas for opportunities when they can’t find a future here at home.
“Māori unemployment is at 10.9 percent and Pasifika unemployment at 11.5 percent. National’s economic failure is hitting these communities especially hard and Christopher Luxon has barely noticed.
“National wiped out around 20,000 construction jobs, and cut thousands of public service positions. Skilled workers are losing their jobs while businesses are struggling to stay afloat.
“None of this was inevitable. When Labour left office unemployment was at 3.9%. Now it’s at an 11-year high.
“National chose cuts over investment, cancelled projects and left businesses to fend for themselves. The result is fewer jobs, less opportunity and more families under pressure.
“Labour will get Kiwis back on the tools, building homes, fixing schools and repairing hospitals. We’ll also stop the cuts to the public services our country relies on and get the economy moving again.
“New Zealand can’t afford another three years of National. If you want a government focused on creating jobs, growing the economy and giving Kiwis a fair shot, party vote Labour,” Barbara Edmonds said.

4. EMA – Rising unemployment highlights employer caution and need for workforce pathways – EMA
November 4, 2026
Source: Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA)
The increase in unemployment, as well as the increased proportion of young New Zealanders not in employment, education or training (NEETs), reflects continued hesitancy among businesses, especially around hiring, says the EMA.
Figures released today by Stats NZ show the unemployment rate rose to 5.7% in the September quarter, from 5.6% in the June quarter. The seasonally adjusted proportion of 15 to 24-year-olds who were NEETs also increased, from 13.8% in the June quarter to 14.1% in the September quarter.
EMA Head of Advocacy and Strategy Alan McDonald says the rise in unemployment was a surprise, given it had been widely expected to remain stable.
“A 0.1 percentage point movement may appear small, but it represents roughly another 3,000 people unemployed and shows the labour market has not yet turned the corner,” says McDonald.
“We are seeing signs of economic recovery, underpinned by strong exports and improving activity in manufacturing, residential construction and tourism. However, the recovery remains brittle, and businesses are still assessing whether stronger demand will last before committing to permanent hires.”
McDonald says the greater use of casual workers and fixed-term contracts reflects the caution employers are showing in the current environment.
“Businesses still need people to fill immediate gaps, but many are not yet ready to take on the longer-term commitment of additional permanent staff. Casual and fixed-term arrangements give them flexibility while they assess the market and the impact of pressures such as higher fuel costs and wider international uncertainty.”
He says the rise in the NEET rate is also concerning because New Zealand cannot afford to have more young people disconnected from employment, education or training.
“Employers regularly tell us that work readiness is one of their biggest recruitment concerns. At the same time, more young people are becoming disconnected from the pathways that could help them build the skills, experience and confidence needed to enter the workplace.”
“The goal cannot simply be to move young people into any available activity. Education and training need to provide genuine pathways into sustainable employment and equip people with the skills businesses need.”
McDonald says employers want stability and clear direction on the major issues affecting investment and hiring, including education, infrastructure and the wider policy environment.
“Confidence is critical. Businesses need a stable environment and greater certainty that the recovery will endure before they invest and hire.
“That requires employers, training providers and government agencies to work much more closely together to connect people with the opportunities businesses are able to create.”

5. Cutting the connection: Police warn copper thieves
November 6, 2026
Source: New Zealand Police
Waitematā Police are concerned about an increase in thefts targeting telecommunications infrastructure, power cables, and electrical substations across our communities.
These offences often occur overnight, with offenders sometimes posing as legitimate workers to avoid suspicion.
Detective Sergeant Luke Blignaut, Waitematā Tactical Crime Unit, says the impact goes beyond stolen copper.
“Damage to power and telecommunications networks can leave homes and businesses without essential services and may put vulnerable members of our community at risk if they rely on electricity or internet-connected medical devices.
“One recent report saw internet lines supplying a school in Swanson deliberately cut.
“During a medical emergency involving a student, staff were unable to immediately access the student’s medical information through the school’s online system. The information had to be manually retrieved from local servers, resulting in a delay of around 20 minutes that could have had serious consequences.”
A second report of a damaged fibre cable left more than 3,100 households and businesses across West Auckland without internet services. The outage affected over 10,000 people in the Swanson and Massey areas.
And an 80-year-old Henderson Valley resident who lives rurally and relies on copper telecommunications lost all connectivity for a month after infrastructure was repeatedly targeted. The loss of connectivity left the resident isolated and without a reliable means of contacting emergency assistance during that period.
These reports all serve as a stark reminder of the significant disruption that damage to this infrastructure can cause to communities, businesses, and essential services.
Detective Sergeant Blignaut reminds the public that stealing telecommunications assets and power cables is a serious criminal offence carrying a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.
“It is also an offence for scrap metal dealers to purchase telecommunications or power infrastructure materials if they know, or are reckless as to whether, the material has been unlawfully obtained.
“Police are working closely with scrap metal dealers and telecommunications providers to help identify stolen materials and prevent offenders from profiting from these crimes.”
Information reported by the public can make a significant difference in preventing further damage and holding offenders accountable.
If you see people working on power lines, telecommunications cables, roadside cabinets, or substations and something doesn’t seem right, do not intervene.
Note any relevant details from a safe distance and contact Police immediately by calling 111 if it’s happening now, or 105 after the fact.
Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
ENDS.

6. 28-Year Caterer Lavish Dine Keeps Nyonya Traditions Relevant Amid Singapore’s Heritage Push
November 4, 2026
Source: Media Outreach
As Singapore steps up heritage preservation, 28-year Halal-certified caterer Lavish Dine puts Peranakan cuisine centre stage with its SG61 Island Collection, bringing Tok Panjang and hawker-rooted flavours to weddings, corporate events and community celebrations to keep culinary traditions alive.
SINGAPORE – Media OutReach Newswire – 4 November 2026 – Singapore’s inaugural SG Heritage Business Scheme has renewed attention on the survival of long-running local trades. Against this preservation push, Lavish Dine Catering shows how catering can keep labour-intensive Nyonya cooking commercially active by serving it at scale across contemporary celebrations.
28-Year Caterer Lavish Dine Keeps Nyonya Traditions Relevant Amid Singapore’s Heritage Push
Keeping Nyonya Craft Alive
Between 2015 and 2025, Singapore’s F&B sector grew 42% amid openings and closures, intensifying pressure on labour-intensive cuisines. Amid this churn, Lavish Dine scales Peranakan cooking for events, retaining hand-ground rempah and slow-cooking techniques across its catering, while the SG61 Island Collection extends that approach to preserve local food heritage through a catering experience.
Taking Peranakan Heritage Beyond the Restaurant
Singapore’s F&B churn has also pushed heritage preservation higher on the agenda. In February 2026, the Ministry of Trade and Industry reaffirmed efforts to preserve local heritage in F&B, including support for established operators and curated food experiences. For Lavish, that preservation happens through continued use, keeping Peranakan cooking on event menus and in front of new audiences.
“Peranakan cuisine holds a special place in our hearts because its recipes carry so much history and meaning. For nearly three decades, we have had the privilege of bringing these flavours to events across Singapore. To us, the best way to honour this heritage is to keep sharing it. Every catered occasion is a chance to introduce these dishes and the stories behind them to new generations and communities, so they can continue to live on,” said Richie Ling, Director, Lavish Dine Catering.
Lavish’s SG61 Island Collection exemplified this, tracing Singapore’s culinary story from Tok Panjang traditions to hawker classics. Its Peranakan catering menus remain available for events across Singapore.

8. Backcountry hut tickets now digital
November 4, 2026
Source: NZ Department of Conservation
Date: 04 November 2026
Visitors staying at the Department of Conservation’s non-bookable huts can now buy their hut tickets online, making it easier to pay for overnight stays without having to visit a DOC visitor centre or retailer before heading away.
DOC Visitor Services Manager Cameron Hyland says the change is about making it simpler for people to plan their trips and pay their hut fees.
“People can now buy their hut tickets online, whenever it suits them, rather than having to find somewhere selling paper tickets before they head off.
“It’s a simple change that makes planning a naturing backcountry trip more convenient, particularly for people heading away at short notice.”
How electronic hut tickets work
Visitors buying an electronic hut ticket select the hut they intend to stay at and the date of their stay, then pay online.
Standard hut tickets remain $15 per adult, per night.
Once purchased, visitors receive an email confirmation. They can download the ticket, save a screenshot, print a copy or note their confirmation number to show as proof of payment if asked.
There’s no need for mobile coverage at the hut, provided visitors have saved their ticket details before heading away.
Cameron says it’s important people understand that buying an electronic ticket doesn’t reserve a bunk.
“Non-bookable huts will continue to operate as they do now, with bunks available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“The ticket is simply proof you’ve paid to stay. If you arrive and the hut is full, or weather or safety conditions mean you need to change your plans, your ticket for that date can be used at another non-bookable hut.
“We encourage people to plan ahead, check conditions and carry appropriate equipment, including alternative shelter where needed.”
Changes to the Backcountry Hut Pass
For people who regularly explore DOC’s backcountry hut network, the Backcountry Hut Pass offers another way to pay for overnight stays.
From 1 November, the Backcountry Hut Pass has been simplified and now covers the same non-bookable huts that accept electronic hut tickets. This makes it clearer for visitors to understand which huts are covered by each option.
The annual pass price has reduced from $160 to $140 because it now covers only non-bookable huts. While bookable huts are no longer included, the pass remains a convenient option for regular backcountry visitors.
“The Backcountry Hut Pass remains a convenient option for regular trampers, while electronic tickets make it easier for people heading away for an occasional overnight trip,” says Cameron.
Visitors should check which huts their pass covers before setting off. Like an electronic ticket, a Backcountry Hut Pass does not guarantee a bunk at a non-bookable hut.
Paper tickets being phased out
People who already have standard paper Backcountry Hut Tickets can continue using them during a 12-month transition period, until 1 November 2027.
Retail sales of paper tickets will be phased out over time as DOC moves towards online purchasing.
People who can’t purchase online themselves can ask someone to buy a ticket on their behalf or contact a DOC visitor centre for assistance.
“Hut fees help DOC look after our backcountry hut network, so making it easier for people to pay is good for visitors and helps support the ongoing care of these facilities,” says Cameron.
“Whether you’re heading out for your first overnight tramp or you’re a regular backcountry visitor, check the DOC website before you go so you know whether you need to book a bunk or buy a hut ticket.”
DOC huts remain available as emergency shelter to anyone who needs them, regardless of whether they have paid a hut fee.

9. Immersive Translate Surpasses 30 Million Users Worldwide and Achieve ISO Certifications for Security and Privacy
November 4, 2026

Immersive Translate Surpasses 30 Million Users Worldwide and Achieve ISO Certifications for Security and Privacy.
As AI Translation Becomes Part of Everyday Life, Data Security Is Key to Choosing a Translation Tool
With the rise of generative AI, translation software is no longer used just to look up words or read foreign-language news. Professionals use it to handle emails and contracts with overseas clients, researchers use it to read large volumes of foreign-language papers, students use it to prepare reports, and corporate teams rely on real-time translation to communicate in international meetings. The wider the range of uses, the more sensitive the content users hand over to translation software, whether unpublished business documents, personal correspondence, or back-end data from internal corporate systems. The more private the information a translation tool handles, the more users care about where their data goes. Security and privacy have become core criteria for users evaluating AI translation tools.
“As AI becomes ever easier to use, users entrust us with their private emails and work documents not only because of the quality of our results, but because they trust us,” said Immersive Translate. “For us, security and privacy are the foundation of every product feature, and a responsibility we owe to our users.”
Immersive Translate Passes Comprehensive Technical and Management Assessments to Earn Dual International Security and Privacy Certifications
The two international certifications Immersive Translate has earned provide dual protection for user data, covering both information security and personal privacy. ISO/IEC 27001 is the globally recognized standard for information security management, ensuring that data is protected from unauthorized access and tampering and remains available at all times. ISO/IEC 27701 builds on ISO 27001 with requirements specifically governing the processing of personal data, and is aligned with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Both certifications were audited clause by clause by an independent third-party body, covering both technical safeguards and organizational management, and are subject to annual review.
In addition to its dual ISO certifications, Immersive Translate’s data processing also complies with two major international privacy laws: the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI). Widely regarded as the world’s strictest data protection regulation, the GDPR safeguards users’ rights to data portability and to be forgotten, and requires data processing to be open and transparent. The APPI governs the collection, use, and cross-border transfer of personal data to protect the rights of data subjects. With hundreds of thousands of users in both Europe and Japan, Immersive Translate sees compliance with local regulations as more than a legal requirement: it ensures that users in every market enjoy the same high standard of privacy protection.
On the technical side, Immersive Translate encrypts all data in transit using HTTPS (SSL/TLS) and strictly enforces the principle of least privilege, ensuring that only authorized personnel have access. Its servers are equipped with 24/7 monitoring and alerting, critical data is backed up regularly, and a disaster recovery plan is in place to minimize the risk of data loss and service disruption.
On the organizational side, Immersive Translate has a dedicated information security team and has established a security management framework covering access control and incident response, with security assessments built into every feature development and system change. All employees also receive regular security training, so data protection is practiced in every aspect of day-to-day operations.
What’s Next for 30 Million Users
Since its launch, Immersive Translate has built a large user base with its pioneering side-by-side bilingual web translation. By placing the translation directly beneath the original text, it lets users keep the context of the source while reading foreign-language content, without switching back and forth between windows. This design, built around how people actually read, has driven steady user growth. Today, Immersive Translate is trusted by over 30 million users worldwide, including students, researchers, professionals, and multinational corporate teams.
As user needs have become more diverse, Immersive Translate has expanded beyond Website Translation to PDF and document translation, Video Subtitle Translation for YouTube and Netflix, real-time Online Meeting Translation for Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, YouTube livestream translation, Image Translation, and Comic & Manga Translation. It is integrated with multiple top-tier AI translation models, including ChatGPT, DeepL, Gemini, and Claude, and supports translation between more than 100 languages. Unlike traditional single-engine translators, its multi-engine integration lets users choose the best translation for each situation, enabling accurate, fluent cross-language communication and understanding.

November 4, 2026
Source: Media Outreach
MediConCen joins forces with Prudentialand Mastercard to further enhance its Medical Expenses Direct Billing.
In the initial phase, Chiron Medical Group serves as the inaugural provider partner, deploying the capability across its network. The platform will expand gradually to more clinics, hospitals and medical networks across Hong Kong in the coming months.
Eligible Prudential customers benefit from three enhancements to the Medical Expenses Direct Billing Service.
Instant appointment booking, making it easier to access medical services when needed.
Instant pre-authorisation, providing earlier confirmation of eligible coverage before treatment.
Cashless settlement of approved medical expenses, reducing the need to pay upfront and submit claims for reimbursement afterwards.
Once an eligible medical expense is approved by Prudential, MediConCen facilitates settlement with the provider partner through the Mastercard virtual card. Provider partners also have access to a dedicated portal for case handling and settlement, enabling prompt payment of approved claims with minimal paperwork. Prudential keeps full control of every coverage decision.
“Nobody should have to worry about the bill when they are seeking treatment,” said William Yeung, Co-founder and CEO, MediConCen. “We built the technology that makes the payment journey invisible. Booking, approval and settlement flow as one. The patient never pays upfront, the provider is paid securely, and Prudential Hong Kong keeps full control of every coverage decision. That is what cashless should feel like.”
Candy Au Yeung, Chief Customer Operations and Health Officer, Prudential Hong Kong Limited, said: “This collaboration goes beyond direct billing by extending the journey upstream to appointment booking and pre-authorisation. It is an example of guided care in action, connecting the different parts of the customer journey across healthcare, technology and payments to further enhance our services and deliver a simpler, more convenient experience. We are also pleased to support home-grown InsurTech innovation as we continue to explore new solutions that provide customers with better experiences and greater peace of mind.”
“At Mastercard, we are committed to helping businesses move money more efficiently, securely and seamlessly. Through our virtual card capabilities, this collaboration enables a secure and streamlined digital settlement flow between insurers and healthcare providers, delivering greater efficiency, visibility and control to the claims process,” said Helena Chen, Senior Vice President, General Manager, Hong Kong & Macau, Mastercard. “Together with Prudential and MediConCen, we are demonstrating how commercial payments innovation can simplify complex B2B payment flows and support a more connected healthcare ecosystem.”
“We are extending the starting point of care even further — quality healthcare begins before patients even step into the clinic. From online appointment booking and consultation to claims settlement, the entire journey is seamlessly connected, allowing our teams to focus on clinical care,” said Wallace Wong, Chief Executive Officer, Chiron Medical Group.
The landmark collaboration brings together Prudential Hong Kong, MediConCen and Mastercard, combining healthcare, InsurTech and payment expertise to simplify a journey that has traditionally involved separate booking, approval and payment steps.
