1. Funding for research into hydrogen resources
November 5, 2026
Source: New Zealand Government
Exploratory research work into the commercial viability of hydrogen resources in Southland will be accelerated by a grant of up to $17.8 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund, Regional Development Minister Shane Jones says.
“This investment is about improving our understanding of hydrogen and whether it can provide New Zealand another source of energy at a time when global access to energy resources is increasingly uncertain,” Mr Jones says.
“Hydrogen presents an exciting economic and emerging energy opportunity. We need to better understand how hydrogen could support New Zealand’s economic growth, strengthen energy security, and build on our natural advantages.
“The research will help establish whether New Zealand’s natural hydrogen resources can be commercially developed. This is an important step towards building a clearer picture of how hydrogen can contribute to our economic prosperity.”
The project, led by Earth Sciences New Zealand in collaboration with University of Canterbury and University of Auckland, is a two-phase early-stage natural and orange hydrogen exploration programme, beginning with a drill site near Bluff in Southland. It will also include investigations into identifying a prospective North Island natural hydrogen drilling location.
“This RIF investment aims to unlock long-term economic value in our regions through the innovative use of New Zealand natural resources,” Mr Jones says.
“The research data from the project is intended to be open access, improving our collective understanding of New Zealand’s natural hydrogen potential and allowing government, researchers and industry to make better-informed decisions about regulation, future exploration, and investment.”
Funding for the project comes from the Government’s $30 million RIF hydrogen package announced in August to help grow the hydrogen sector.
Editors’ note
White hydrogen, also known as natural hydrogen, occurs naturally underground while orange hydrogen is produced through reactions of certain rock formations.
Both are emerging globally as potential lower-emissions sources of hydrogen for industrial processes, fertiliser and chemical production, fuel, and hard-to-electrify sectors such as heavy transport, industry, aviation and the maritime sector.

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Newswire – 5 November 2026 – Cyberport Venture & Capital Forum (CVCF) 2026 successfully concluded its two-day event, recording over 600+ deal flows. Centered on the theme “Scaling in a Changing World: Winning the Next Competitive Cycle”, Cyberport’s annual flagship forum convened over 2800+ attendees and over 200,000+ online views. The forum facilitated direct engagement between international investors and high-growth technology enterprises through founder pitch sessions, structured investor matching, startup clinics, and innovation showcases. Industry leaders and global investors exchanged critical market intelligence on emerging cross-border opportunities, capital strategies, and scalable enterprise models. The forum also served as a premier platform for exploring next-generation technology solutions, highlighting advances in agentic AI, tech infrastructure transformation, and asset tokenisation.
The spotlight event of CVCF, the “Agentic Economy Summit“, featured a keynote speech by Joseph Chan, Under Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury of the HKSAR Government, with welcome remarks from Dr Rocky Cheng, CEO of Cyberport.
Joseph Chan, Under Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury, stated in his speech, “Digital Assets are redefining how value moves across the global economy. Hong Kong is not merely observing this transformation; we are actively leading and architecting it. The Blockchain & Digital Asset Pilot Subsidy Scheme launched by Cyberport last year received an encouraging response, with more than half of the shortlisted projects already successfully commercialised. Building on this momentum, the FSTB has commissioned Cyberport to launch Scheme 2.0 to foster collaboration between technology companies and enterprises, accelerating the development and adoption of innovative solutions in real-world asset tokenisation, blockchain and digital assets. We will continue working closely with the industry to build a trusted, sustainable and vibrant digital asset ecosystem.”
Dr Rocky Cheng, CEO of Cyberport, stated in his speech, “Agentic AI is evolving from workplace assistants to autonomous entities that transact and decide on our behalf, accelerating the agentic economy from a vision into reality. We must confront three core questions: how to anchor trust when autonomous agents transact; how to take stablecoins and tokenised assets from pilot to scale; and where the human edge endures as AI drives execution costs toward zero. Hong Kong has already laid a solid foundation for the compliant issuance of stablecoins and tokenised assets. The next imperative is to drive their practical adoption across circulation, trading, collateralisation, and cross-border settlement. At the same time, the One-Person Companies (OPC) model is redefining entrepreneurship, unlocking unprecedented opportunities for young founders. Cyberport will continue to champion its role Serving as Hong Kong’s digital tech flagship and AI accelerator, Cyberport rallies talent, technology, capital, and market access to drive the Government’s I&T agenda and cement Hong Kong’s leadership in AI and digital assets.”

Summit Features Groundbreaking Format with Two Venues and Three Core Themes
“Global University Presidents and Leaders Summit 2026” stands as Hong Kong’s most premier educational event of the year. “We live in an age of rapid technological change, systemic economic shifts, and unprecedented global challenges,” Mr Chan said. “In this transformative landscape, universities are no longer just communities of learning and skills development. 6. Kiwis want solar power, but upfront costs remain a major barrier, PowerCompare.co.nz survey finds
November 4, 2026
Source: NZ Compare
New survey reveals strong interest in residential solar, with more than half of respondents without solar already considering making the switch.
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – 4 November 2026 – New Zealanders are increasingly interested in generating their own electricity, but the upfront cost of installing solar power remains a significant consideration for households, according to a new survey conducted by PowerCompare.co.nz.
The survey of 498 respondents found that almost one in four (23.3%) already have solar power installed at home. Of those who don’t, more than half (51.6%) said they are currently considering installing it, while a further 35.8% are unsure.
The findings suggest there is considerable potential for residential solar adoption in New Zealand, particularly if households can access affordable installation options and practical financial support.
With the November General Election approaching, Power Compare also asked respondents which of the major parties’ proposed solar policies was most attractive to them.
The results were relatively close:
- National – Home Energy Fund: 28.0%
- Green Party – Interest-free loans and community energy: 25.9%
- Labour – SolarSaver: 22.2%
- The Opportunity Party – Low-interest finance and more renewable generation: 6.5%
- None of the above: 12.7%
The results indicate that financial assistance is an important consideration for consumers, with the leading policy options all offering some form of support to help households adopt solar technology.
Election policies could influence future solar adoption
When asked how much more likely they would be to consider solar power after the November election if favourable policies were introduced, respondents gave an average likelihood score of 68.6 out of 100.
Of the 376 people who answered this question, 79.5% gave a score of 50 or higher, suggesting that supportive government policies could play a meaningful role in influencing household decisions.
However, awareness of the parties’ solar policies is not universal. While 66.7% described themselves as somewhat, very or extremely aware, almost one-third said they were either not very aware or not aware at all.
It’s about more than just generating electricity
Power Compare says the survey highlights an important point: while solar power offers households the opportunity to reduce their reliance on the electricity grid and potentially lower their long-term energy costs, the initial investment needs to make financial sense.
Factors raised by respondents included the upfront installation price, access to interest-free or low-interest finance, expected savings, payback periods, the ability to sell excess electricity back to the grid and confidence in installation quality.
For some households, the decision also comes down to how long they expect to remain in their home and whether the investment will pay for itself over time.
Prutha Patel, NZ Compare Sales and Partnerships Manager, says:
“Solar power is a great opportunity for New Zealand households. It can help reduce electricity bills, give consumers more control over where their energy comes from and reduce their reliance on the traditional electricity network.
“But the reality is that installing solar is a significant upfront investment. People need to understand what it will cost, how much they could realistically save and how long it will take to pay for itself.
“Government support and accessible finance could make a real difference, but consumers also need to make sure they’re getting a good deal on the electricity they continue to buy from their retailer.”
Solar is only part of the equation
Power Compare believes households considering solar should also look closely at their electricity plan.
Even with solar panels installed, most households will continue to rely on electricity from the grid at certain times, particularly overnight or during periods of lower solar generation. The buy-back rate offered for excess electricity can also vary significantly between electricity retailers.
“Getting solar installed is one part of the equation. Making sure you’re on the right electricity plan is just as important,” Patel says.
“Consumers should compare electricity prices, daily charges and solar buy-back rates rather than assuming their existing power company will offer the best deal once they have solar.”
Power Compare encourages households considering solar to research installation costs, understand the expected return on investment and compare electricity plans to ensure they are getting the best overall value.
About Power Compare
PowerCompare.co.nz is a New Zealand electricity comparison service helping consumers compare power providers and find competitive electricity deals. Its aim is to make it easier for households to understand their options and make informed decisions about their energy costs.
Survey methodology: Power Compare’s online NZ Solar Power Survey received 498 responses. Individual questions had varying response counts, and percentages are calculated using valid responses to each question. The survey was conducted online and is not a nationally representative probability sample.

Confirmed speakers from the global investment community include Will Brilliant, Partner at Global Infrastructure Partners and Head of Digital Infrastructure at BlackRock; David Luboff, Partner, Co-Head of Asia Pacific and Head of Asia Pacific Infrastructure at KKR; Andrew Burych, Managing Partner and Head of East Asia at Brookfield Real Estate Group; Roger Zhang, Managing Director and Co-Head of Asia at Oaktree; and Manraj S. Sekhon, Chief Investment Officer of Templeton Global Investments at Franklin Templeton.
Global business and technology leaders from Freeport-McMoRan, Jardine Matheson, AirAsia, Databricks, Archer Aviation and Honeywell will also be represented, bringing perspectives from industries shaping the region’s next phase of economic growth.
Asia Pacific accounts for close to 60% of global economic growth, yet significant opportunities remain to mobilize long term capital towards the region’s investment and development priorities. As global investors reassess capital allocation strategies amid shifting economic and geopolitical dynamics, Asia offers opportunities for diversification, new partnerships and sustained value creation.
The investment institutions represented at NAF collectively manage trillions of dollars across public and private markets. Their participation brings together global capital, policymakers and business leaders to forge partnerships and advance concrete investment opportunities across the region.
Pahala Nugraha Mansury, Managing Director of Global Relations & Communications at Danantara Indonesia, a founding partner of the New Asia Forum, emphasized the importance of moving beyond investment interest towards sustained institutional engagement and concrete partnerships.
“The participation of leading global investment institutions shows that global investors are paying closer attention to Asia. However, the real opportunity is not just attracting more capital, but building the right partnerships to turn the region’s potential into lasting investment.
“The New Asia Forum brings global investors, governments and industry to the same table, so that conversations become meaningful collaboration and opportunities. For Danantara Indonesia, it is about establishing Indonesia as a trusted, enduring partner for global capital,” said Pahala.
Beyond the investment community, NAF 2026 will convene senior government leaders, including H.E. Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan, and Sebastian Kurz, former Federal Chancellor of Austria.
Their participation reflects NAF’s broader ambition to connect capital with the industrial capabilities, technologies and strategic partnerships required to unlock new investment opportunities across Asia. The growing lineup follows the announcement earlier this month of NAF 2026’s ambition to help mobilize US$30 billion in investment across the New Asia region, with Danantara Indonesia serving as a founding partner.
Designed to move beyond dialogue, NAF 2026 will place particular emphasis on facilitating actionable investment opportunities and partnerships. The forum will feature targeted investor engagements, private roundtables and opportunities to connect international capital with selected investment propositions. The objective is to establish relationships and advance discussions that can be developed into concrete investment outcomes beyond the forum itself.
Held under the patronage of President Prabowo Subianto, NAF 2026 is expected to convene more than 1,000 participants, including senior government officials, global investors, sovereign investment institutions and business leaders, across more than 40 sessions. Further speaker announcements and program updates will be released ahead of the December gathering.
As a founding partner of the New Asia Forum, Danantara Indonesia views the forum as an important platform to advance its mandate of mobilizing long-term capital, building strategic global partnerships, and expanding investment capacity to support Indonesia’s economic transformation. By bringing together global investors, sovereign institutions, policymakers and industry leaders, NAF 2026 enables Danantara Indonesia to connect international capital and expertise with investment opportunities in Indonesia’s priority sectors, while strengthening Indonesia’s position as a trusted long-term investment partner in the region.

9. Greenpeace urges WHO to update decades-old drinking water guidelines over nitrate health risks
November 3, 2026
Source: Greenpeace
Greenpeace and a global coalition of more than 80 environmental and health NGOs are calling on the World Health Organization (WHO) to review the international drinking water standards for nitrate, to protect public health from the growing threat of agricultural pollution.
Organisations including Greenpeace International, the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems, and the World Organization of Family Doctors have signed on to an open letter to the WHO, which can be read here.
Amanda Larsson, Greenpeace’s Global Project Lead for agriculture (based in New Zealand) says, “Water should be life-giving, not life-threatening. We cannot protect human health without protecting the groundwater and rivers that sustain us. Governments must take decisive action to curb the growth of intensive livestock farming and actively support producers in transitioning to ecological farming practices – ensuring that clean, safe drinking water isn’t a luxury but a guarantee.”
Dr Pratyush Kumar, Chair of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) Working Party on Rural Practice, says, “Studies now link nitrate in drinking water, at levels well below the current WHO limit, to bowel cancer and premature birth. As a rural family doctor, I support the call to update these limits so that farming families can trust the water they drink. In low-resource areas, that must come with international support, helping communities achieve both chemical and essential microbial safety.”
In Aotearoa, drinking water nitrate is a growing threat to rural communities’ health, with a recent Environment Canterbury groundwater survey revealing that nitrate contamination is continuing to rise in the region’s drinking water.
Larsson says that the nitrate emergency will continue to worsen without rapid action.
“We need the Government here in Aotearoa to take action now to protect the health of people and the planet. That means stopping the expansion of intensive dairying, because it is a leading source of nitrate contamination in New Zealand. There are simply too many cows, and the industry is using too much synthetic nitrogen fertiliser to feed them all.”
“We also need to see the regulatory limit on nitrate in drinking water lowered, in line with the current health science. The Danish Government has already committed to do this and so could New Zealand.”
Timed to coincide with World One Health Day, marked by the WHO and three other UN bodies to highlight the interdependence between human, animal, and ecosystem health, the coalition is calling on the WHO Secretariat and its Guideline Development Group to formally prioritise nitrate for full evaluation in its upcoming review of global drinking water quality guidelines.
The letter argues that current guidelines are outdated and risk exposing the public to a range of adverse health risks. The existing guideline of 50 mg/L NO₃ (11.3 mg/L NO₃-N) was established in 1958 specifically to prevent infant methemoglobinemia, also known as “blue-baby syndrome”. However, a growing body of 21st-century epidemiological research links chronic, low-level exposure to nitrate in drinking water to increased risks of colorectal cancer, preterm birth, and birth defects at concentrations far below the existing threshold.
Because national governments generally peg their own drinking water standards to WHO guidelines, the coalition’s open letter emphasises that an updated WHO standard is vital for global policy reform.

10. Westport aged care investment welcomed, but every community deserves access to care
November 3, 2026
Source: Aged Care Association
The Aged Care Association (ACA) welcomes the Government’s announcement of funding support for 24 additional aged residential care beds at O’Conor Home in Westport, but says the investment reinforces the need for a nationwide aged residential care infrastructure plan.
ACA Chief Executive Hon Tracey Martin says the announcement is welcome news for Westport and the Buller community.
“This is exactly the sort of investment we need. Older New Zealanders should be able to receive the care they need close to their families, friends and communities, and this funding will help make that possible for more people in Buller.
“But Westport is not alone. Communities across New Zealand are struggling to maintain or expand aged residential care, and places such as Wairoa and Reefton have no aged residential care facilities at all.
“Our election campaign, The Long Drive, highlighted the heartbreaking reality for families forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to visit loved ones because appropriate care is no longer available close to home.
“One of the stories we shared was from the West Coast, where a husband was making a 240-kilometre return journey twice a week to visit his wife in dementia care. That is why investment in local services matters so much.”
Martin says the Government’s decision to support O’Conor Home demonstrates the importance of recognising aged residential care as essential health infrastructure.
“We welcome the Ministers’ recognition that investing in aged residential care also reduces pressure on hospitals and the wider health system. Aged care is health care, and it needs to be planned and funded accordingly.
“But we cannot rely on individual communities securing one-off funding arrangements. We need a national plan that identifies where care is needed today, where demand will grow, and how we will ensure that capacity is available.”
Martin says a dedicated aged residential care infrastructure grant fund remains one of ACA’s key priorities.
“There are existing facilities where targeted capital investment could bring standard, non-premium beds back into service relatively quickly. We should be doing that now, while also progressing the wider funding and structural reforms proposed by the Ministerial Advisory Group.
“The Regional Infrastructure Fund has helped make this project possible in Westport. What we are asking for is a dedicated, nationwide funding mechanism so that other communities have a clear pathway to securing the aged care infrastructure they need.
“The Long Drive was about making sure New Zealanders understood what was at stake when local aged care services disappear. Today’s announcement shows what can be achieved when investment is made.
“Now we need to ensure that opportunity is available across the country.
“Every older New Zealander deserves the right care, in the right place, at the right time, close to home.
“The address may change, but the right to care does not.”
