A teenager faces serious charges after a theft from a Māngere Bridge liquor shop.

Police responded to Coronation Road on Tuesday afternoon after the offender had allegedly stolen alcohol and threatened staff working.

Acting Senior Sergeant Joanna Hunkin, Counties Manukau West Area Response Manager, says the incident occurred at around 4.45pm.

“The teenage offender allegedly picked up two boxes of alcohol and was asked to provide ID at the counter,” she says.

“Around the same time, this male has created a distraction and picked up the alcohol without attempting to pay.

“While heading for the door, he has allegedly presented a machete at a staff member and made threatening remarks.”

Police units responded to the area, including a Police dog handler.

Acting Senior Sergeant Hunkin says a track was carried out from the store, leading Police to a property in Māngere Bridge.

“Police entered the address, arresting a teenage male and locating a box of alcohol as well as a machete,” she says.

“I acknowledge our staff’s response last night to this incident. This behaviour is not welcome in our community, and we will hold this male to account.”

The 17-year-old will appear in the Manukau Youth Court today, charged with theft, possessing an offensive weapon and threatens to kill.
