WHAT:
Workers First members in Auckland will attend the union’s final Stop-Work meeting for the year, with over 800 members expected and the leaders of the Green and Labour parties speaking to the crowd.
While Stop-Work Meetings are typically private, media are invited to attend this event.
WHEN:
Thursday 29 October, 11:00am – 12:00pm
WHERE:
Go Media Stadium, Gate C, 2 Beasley Avenue, Penrose, Auckland 1061
WHY:
Dennis Maga, Workers First General Secretary, said the union had hosted nearly 40 Stop-Work meetings around the country for union members since August. This Auckland Central meeting is expected to be one of the largest, and the crowd will be addressed by Labour leader Chris Hipkins and Green co-leaders Chloe Swarbrick and Marama Davidson.
“We will be challenging politicians on how committed they are to a better working life for union members, who have spent three years under attack,” said Mr Maga.
“The next government must urgently reverse the coalition’s anti-worker legislation and introduce new laws that benefit New Zealanders as a whole.”
“We are a non-affiliated union and not associated to any political party, but this year, we are explicitly calling on our members to play a part by changing the government this election.”
“Words of solidarity will not be enough on their own. Union members will be listening for real commitments, and they’ll remember them when they vote.”
Mr Maga said that attendees would include supermarket store and distribution centre workers, who would be particularly keen to hear about the parties’ plans to deal with supermarket price-gouging and the Woolworths/Foodstuffs duopoly.
