A man is facing charges after a brazen daylight theft worth thousands of dollars in Silverdale.

The community was quick to contact Police after the alleged offender was spotted in Red Beach.

At about 3pm on Monday, Police received a report of a man allegedly stealing items and cash from a vehicle parked in a driveway on Totara Views Drive, Silverdale.

Waitematā North Area Response Manager, Acting Senior Sergeant Brett Hanly, says CCTV footage of the incident was also shared on social media.

“The community quickly identified the man and reported this to Police after the alleged offender was sighted in the area.

“The Police Dog Unit was deployed and officers cordoned the area; however, he was unable to be located at that time.”

Acting Senior Sergeant Hanly says that a short time later, officers in the area observed a man running from a nearby property.

“He was pursued on foot and subsequently taken into custody.

“Following a number of enquiries, the man has been charged with several dishonesty-related offences, which is a great result for the community.

“We continue to encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour to contact Police as soon as possible.”

A 42-year-old man is due to appear in the North Shore District Court today, facing several theft and dishonesty-related charges.
