LISTEN FOR A BITTERN
The Northland Regional Council is encouraging volunteer citizen scientists to participate in the nationwide Great Matuku-hūrepo Muster run by Love Bittern. The event aims to bring people together to help count and monitor the cryptic and highly mobile threatened species, Australasian Bittern by listening out for the male booming call.
To participate:
- Visit your local wetland and record male bittern booming for 60-90 minutes around sunset for 1-3 consecutive days at a single wetland from Friday, October 23rd to Sunday 1st November and from Friday 20th November to Sunday 29th November.
- Register yourself or a group of volunteers online and download the Conservation Hub app: https://conservationhub.nz/
- Sit, listen and take note of any booming on the app or write down the details.
