FREE EARTHWORKS FIELD DAY
Two hundred contractors, consultants, and local authority staff working across erosion and sediment control are expected to attend a free hands-on day for the earthworks industry to be held at Whangārei’s Barge Showgrounds on Wednesday 16 September.
The first of its kind event – which will run from will run from 9am to 3pm – is a collaboration between Northland Regional Council, the region’s three district councils, the International Erosion Control Association and Civil Contractors New Zealand.
The event is built on an ‘education before enforcement’ approach, helping lift capability across the region through shared learning, practical demonstrations, and real-world insights.
The day will include short, practical presentations, live product demonstrations, real-world examples and lessons learned as well as opportunities to connect with councils and industry.

NEW POU TIAKI PŪTAIAO | GROUP MANAGER BIOSECURITY WELCOMED
Northland Regional Council (NRC) has formally welcomed Kane McElrea as its new Pou Tiaki Pūtaiao | Group Manager Biosecurity, following a pōwhiri at Te Puna o Te Mātauranga Marae in Whangārei on Thursday 03 September.
Kane is a familiar face to NRC and returns to the organisation with strong biosecurity experience, leadership capability, and a clear commitment to protecting Northland’s unique environment.
His appointment comes at an important time for regional biosecurity, with major programmes continuing across pest plants, marine pests, freshwater biosecurity, and animal pests.
The pōwhiri brought together councillors, kaimahi, partners, whānau and friends, and also acknowledged outgoing Group Manager Don McKenzie’s 21 years of leadership. Don will continue supporting the mahi as Principal Advisor Biosecurity.
