Foreign Minister Winston Peters has welcomed the United States’ decision to provide energy support to the Pacific.
“Since travelling to Washington DC in April, we’ve been regularly discussing with the United States the impacts of the Middle East conflict on the Pacific, and the need for tangible support to the region,” Mr Peters says.
“In that context, we welcome today’s announcement by the United States to help address budget shortfalls caused by the ongoing global energy crisis.”
The US support, of US$60 million was announced at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
“The Pacific, given its isolation and near total dependence on imported fuel, is exceptionally vulnerable to oil price shocks, especially this year.
“That’s why Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers have been regularly discussing how best to respond to the fuel crisis, and why New Zealand – alongside Australia, Japan the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank – has been working so hard to assist Pacific Island countries to deal with it.
“We are pleased to have the United States on board contributing to this vital work.
“New Zealand’s Pacific development programme has a strong focus on economic and energy resilience in order to help our Pacific partners reduce demand for imported fuels through increased renewable generation and improved energy efficiency,” Mr Peters says.
