A pair of alleged car thieves didn’t get far after quick work by Whangārei Police.
Around 9.15pm on Monday, Police were called to an address on Bank Street after reports a vehicle had been stolen in Regent.
Acting Senior Sergeant Charmaine Smith, Whangārei Area Response Manager says the victim was leaving his workplace when he spotted two unknown people inside a co-worker’s car.
“He confronted the alleged offenders and asked what they were doing.”
The pair exited the vehicle and advanced towards the victim, with a screwdriver falling out of one of the alleged offenders’ pockets.
“At this point the victim has retreated, and the alleged offenders have climbed into his vehicle,” Acting Senior Sergeant Smith says.
“They have then driven off and left the area.”
Officers attending the scene quickly began enquiries, which led to an address in Parihaka.
“As units pulled up the two alleged offenders were standing outside next to the stolen vehicle,” Acting Senior Sergeant Smith says.
“They initially ran, but officers gave chase and caught up a short distance away.”
Both were taken into custody without issue.
“This was a good result by our staff with prompt enquiries leading to the apprehension of these alleged offenders,” Acting Senior Sergeant Smith says.
“We continue to send the message that this type of brazen offending has no place in our community.”
A 15-year-old male appeared in the Whangārei Youth Court charged with unlawfully getting into a vehicle and possessing instruments for car conversion.
A 13-year-old female will be referred to Youth Aid.
