We have an effective tool in healthy school lunches, Ka Ora Ka Ako, says Health Coalition Aotearoa food expert Dr Kelly Garton.
“Research shows a nutritious lunch makes a difference to children’s futures.
“When tamariki are well fed, they can learn, grow, and participate fully in their education and communities.”
“We already have a foundation to build on: the Ka Ora, Ka Ako healthy school lunch programme, which reaches about a quarter of students.
“However, recent funding cuts have reduced the size and quality of meals. With the right investment and a fair pricing model, Ka Ora, Ka Ako could expand while providing meals that better meet children’s nutritional needs.
“This would support learning, improve attendance, and deliver long-term social and economic benefits.”
