4. New Zealand to host Indian Prime Minister
July 3, 2026
Source: New Zealand Government
Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will make his first official visit to New Zealand next week, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has announced.
“Prime Minister Modi’s visit is historic, with this being the first to New Zealand by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years,” Mr Luxon says.
“India is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies, and a country of enormous importance to New Zealand’s prosperity.
“We are taking the two countries’ relationship to the next level with our New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement, signed in April, which will deliver more jobs, higher exports and stronger economic growth for New Zealand.
“It will reduce or eliminate tariffs on 95 per cent of New Zealand’s exports to India once fully implemented. From day one, 57 per cent of our exports will be tariff-free.
“This will unlock new opportunities to grow our goods and services exports into a market of 1.4 billion people and contribute to achieving the Government’s goal of building the future by doubling the value of exports by 2034.”
The visit reflects the growing momentum in the New Zealand-India relationship. Discussions between the leaders will include trade and investment, maritime security, education, technology, tourism, sport, and global issues.
“We will also be celebrating the people-to-people connections between our two countries, with Kiwi-Indians comprising around 6 percent of New Zealand’s population and making a significant contribution to our country. They are highly engaged across the workforce, with strong representation in business, technology, health, science and many other important sectors.
“This visit is about celebrating a winning partnership between New Zealand and India – one that delivers for our people and supports greater prosperity and security for both our countries. I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi to New Zealand.”
The Indian Prime Minister will arrive in Auckland on Friday 10 July and depart on Saturday 11 July.

5. Fight for worker health and safety not over says NZCTU
July 1, 2026
Source: NZCTU
Workers are disappointed by the passing of the Health and Safety at Work Amendment Bill, but an opportunity has arisen to minimise its damage, says Melissa Ansell-Bridges, Secretary of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi.
“This law change stands to have a significant impact on the lives of working people. It is very disappointing to see the Government choosing to make life even harder for workers who are already doing it tough at the moment. Workers shouldn’t be having to worry that their workplace protections are being eroded just because of the size of the business they work for, or because some MPs don’t consider threats to their health as ‘critical’.
These changes are out of touch with the reality of work says Ansell-Bridges.
“Risks that workers face every day in the workplace – such as violence and aggression, stress and fatigue, and musculoskeletal injuries – have been deprioritised.
“However, the actions of trade unions and working people to fight back against this law change has given us a window of opportunity to limit the damage it can do.
“Our petition, co-sponsored by Stand with Pike campaigners Sonya Rockhouse and Anna Osborne, calling on MPs to vote against this law, gathered over 12,000 signatures in a fortnight. It was this pressure that has seen the commencement date of this law moved past the election to April 2027.
The CTU will now turn our efforts to ensuring that this law does not come into effect.
“We will be pushing the new Government elected in November to repeal this law before it can do harm to workers,” says Ansell-Bridges.

9. Striding AI Announces Development of Next-Generation Robotic Foundation Systems for Physical AI Deployment
July 2, 2026
Source: Media Outreach
BEIJING, CHINA – Media OutReach Newswire – 2 July 2026 – Striding AI today announced that it is developing a new generation of robotic foundation systems designed to accelerate the deployment of Physical AI in real-world environments.
The company’s approach focuses on building the foundational technologies required for robots to perceive, reason, act, and continuously improve through interaction with the physical world. By integrating advanced foundation models with robotic perception, control systems, real-world action data, and deployment infrastructure, Striding AI aims to enable intelligent machines to perform useful tasks across commercial, industrial, and everyday settings.
Powered by a world-class team of researchers, engineers, product builders, and business leaders, the company is pushing the boundaries of Physical AI through World Action Models and next-generation reinforcement learning technologies. By accelerating the large-scale adoption of robotics across commercial and industrial applications, Striding AI aims to become a leading trustworthy robotic service provider.
“We believe that breakthroughs in Physical AI emerge from the continuous co-evolution of data, models, and infrastructure.” said Song Yao, founder and CEO of Striding AI.
The company takes a systems-first approach to physical AI, integrating foundation models, robot hardware and software, data infrastructure, control systems, and deployment engineering for building scalable service. The company’s leadership team includes founders and executives with backgrounds in AI chips, autonomous driving, robotics research, and industrial technology, combining deep technical expertise with experience bringing complex technologies into production environments.
Striding AI plans to begin with practical deployment scenarios in structured environments such as retail, where robots can support tasks including shelf restocking, inventory counting, product organization, and checkout assistance. These environments provide frequent human interaction, repeatable workflows, and rich operational data, making them a strong starting point for developing scalable Physical AI systems.
Over time, Striding AI expects its robotic foundation systems to support broader applications across sectors including retail, food, agriculture, logistics, healthcare, and telecommunications. The company’s long-term vision is to build robots that learn from real-world experience, improve continuously, and become part of everyday human environments.
Behind its deployment strategy, Striding AI is developing a new generation of robotic foundation systems that can turn multimodal perception into real-world robotic action. By integrating advanced foundation models with robotic perception, control, and real-world action data, the system learns actionable representations of how actions affect and change the physical world through interaction, enabling robots to transfer skills more effectively across different tasks and environments.
These capabilities are integrated into a closed-loop robotics architecture spanning perception, planning, execution, feedback, and recovery, where human-in-the-loop reinforcement learning turns real-world operations into continuous training data.
In early internal testing, Striding AI’s human-in-the-loop RL method improved task success rates by up to 3x. To scale this flywheel, Striding AI is building infrastructure for robot pretraining, distributed reinforcement learning, and edge-to-cloud orchestration, creating a platform designed to improve as more robots operate in real-world environments.
Striding AI sees Physical AI as a full-stack effort, where foundation models, robotic systems, data, infrastructure, and deployment capabilities must advance together.
The capabilities developed in real-world environments, from handling diverse objects and understanding retail shelves to planning and executing complex tasks, are part of an integrated system designed for broader robotic applications. Through this systems-first approach, Striding AI aims to build robots that learn from real-world experience, improve over time, and gradually become part of everyday human environments.

10. Off-peak pricing to make power more affordable
July 1, 2026
Source: New Zealand Government
New rules come into force today requiring the large power companies to provide customers with power plans that reflect the different costs of electricity throughout the day, giving customers more choice and helping to make power bills more affordable, Energy Minister Simeon Brown says.
“The big power companies generate power for different prices at different times of the day, but those same companies usually sell that power to residential and small business customers at one price, regardless of when they use the power.
“That is unfair and, from today, the Electricity Authority is requiring the big power companies to offer ‘time-of-use’ pricing plans to households and small businesses.
“This will give more people the option of shifting some of their power usage to take advantage of cheaper rates where possible, making their power bills lower than they otherwise would have been.
Time-of-use plans usually have three price periods:
- Peak – Prices are highest when demand for electricity is highest, typically 7am to 10am and 5pm to 9pm.
- Off-peak or shoulder – These are the periods following peak periods when demand starts dropping off. Typically, they’re:10am to 5pm and 9pm to 11pm.
- Night – Prices are lowest when demand is lowest. Typically: 11pm to 7am.
“The new rules will also support those with solar and batteries by making time-of-use pricing available for electricity exported back into the system, which can better reward those able to do so.
“This means customers who export power back to the grid during peak times can be rewarded with higher returns for doing so.
“Together, these changes will not only support more affordable power bills but also make the uptake of solar and batteries more attractive. This sits alongside recent changes doubling the export limits for households exporting power back to the grid from 5kW to 10kW.
“This is one more action in the Government’s plan for abundant, affordable and reliable energy for all New Zealanders.
“There is no single or overnight fix to achieve this, but there are a number of measures the Government is rolling out to give consumers more control and flexibility over their power usage and bills.
“Introducing time-of-use plans which can make power cheaper, or even free, during off-peak times, is one of those steps.
“To see whether a time-of-use plan suits your needs, check with your power company or visit billy.govt.nz – the Electricity Authority’s free price comparison and switching tool. You can check whether you are on the best deal and find realistic estimates on savings.”
