Attribute to Detective Sergeant Aleki Maka, Nelson Tactical Crime Unit:

A 32-year-old alleged serial burglar in Nelson has been arrested and remanded in custody.

The man will appear in the Nelson District Court on 14 July facing numerous burglary charges.

Police located the local suspect after investigating their latest burglary on Washington Road.

A search warrant executed at his home address found a stash of stolen items.

Stolen property ranged from several expensive bicycles, flat screen televisions, gaming consoles and controllers, power tools, garden tools, personal souvenirs, clothing and other items.

Further investigation revealed the man was the missing piece of the puzzle for around 20 alleged burglary crimes – reported all the way back from May 2021.

The burglar allegedly went to some addresses repeatedly, stealing more items each time and on some occasions, allegedly left notes for his victims.

Enquiries will be undertaken to return the stolen items to their rightful owners.

Tasman Police encourage everyone to consider how they can secure their homes further to prevent burglars from targeting their properties.

Make sure you:

  • Lock all gates, doors and windows – even if you’re gone briefly. Window stays and lock bolts are cheap to install and go a long way to prevent theft.
  • Store your valuables out of sight and locked away. If you’ve got tools or notable appliances, engrave them with your name and write down serial numbers.
  • Check whether you can put in sensor lighting, alarms, or CCTV.
  • Get to know your neighbours. By keeping any eye out for one another, you can help prevent crime in your area.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity around properties is urged to call 111 immediately. For non-emergencies, please make a report through 105, either online or over the phone.
