Fleeing dirt biker caught for his crime

Police have arrested a dirt bike rider in Hamilton after they tried to evade the scene of a crash yesterday. 

Around 3.50pm, a dirt bike reported to be driving dangerously collided with a car on Victoria Street in central Hamilton. 

Thankfully, no one was injured, but the dirt bike rider immediately ran from the scene. 

Little did he know, an off-duty officer was watching this incident unfold and followed the man until on-duty Police arrived. 

A chase on foot stretched from Ulster Street to Te Rapa Straight, with members of the public pointing out the offenders’ movements before leading to his apprehension. 

A 33-year-old man was arrested and appeared in Hamilton District Court today facing drove a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner and failing to stop or ascertain injury charges. 

Officers working at the crash scene checked the registration of the bike, which revealed it was reported to be stolen all the way from Pokuru, in Waipā. 

The bike has since been impounded for 28 days and further enquiries will be made to confirm its ownership. 

Police always ask anyone that sees illegal or dangerous driving to make reports so officers can follow up and hold offenders to account.
