A night of alleged car thefts ended with spiked tyres and a ride in a Police car for four Northland youths.

At around 10pm on Sunday 28 June, Police received a stolen vehicle report from a residential address in Kaikohe.

Far North Area Commander, Inspector John Fagan, says area searches were undertaken but were unable to locate the vehicle.

“Police were then alerted to another vehicle that had been stolen from Kerikeri.

“It became clear these suspects were actively reoffending across the Mid North and would likely continue through the night.”

A Police patrol unit soon identified the stolen vehicle travelling along State Highway 12, west of Kaikohe.

Officers maintained observations on the vehicle.

“Spikes were successfully deployed on SH12, and with three tyres deflated, the vehicle came to a stop.

“The driver and three passengers were arrested and taken into custody,” Inspector Fagan says.

A subsequent search of the vehicle located a large knife.

“This is a fantastic result and reflects the skill, teamwork and commitment of our staff in keeping the community safe and preventing further harm.

Four males aged between 12 and 16 will be referred to Youth Aid.

ENDS.
