2. Taupō fishing regulation updates increase bag limits
June 11, 2026
Source: New Zealand Government
Taupō District’s trout bag limits will increase for the new fishing season, improving stock quality and creating more opportunities for anglers and local businesses, Hunting and Fishing Minister James Meager says.
Mr Meager has approved a bag limit increase from six to eight trout, taking effect from 1 July.
“Lake Taupō trout are heavily dependent on their primary food source, smelt, to grow quickly and maintain condition. However, data shows smelt levels are under pressure due an imbalance from the large trout population,” Mr Meager says.
“Taupō spawning streams are often described as ‘hyper productive’, generating huge numbers of juvenile trout annually. Angler harvest is essential to maintaining a healthy population.
“Increasing the bag limit is a logical, evidence-based decision. History has shown a collapse in smelt numbers dramatically impacts the size and condition of trout.
“This win-win move will improve fishing conditions, encourage greater participation, put more food on the table for families, and benefit local businesses.
“The Taupo trout fishery is a world-renowned angling destination, attracting visitors from all over the world while providing strong fishing opportunities for locals.
“It is also a significant resource for the local economy, with annual sales revenue of around $1.3m generated from the sale of around 30,000 fishing licences. The fishery supports hundreds of local jobs and contributes to tens of millions of dollars in business turnover.
“It is vital this resource is well managed to ensure its viability for years to come.”
Mr Meager has also approved several minor regulation changes, designed to simplify the rules and make them easier for anglers to understand.
“This includes the removal of the fixed February closure at Lake Otamangakau. A more responsive management approach will be adopted, which looks closely at predicted weather patterns,” Mr Meager says.
“These changes are yet another example of our Government’s commitment to improving freshwater fishing opportunities for all New Zealanders.”

3. Maximum Contribution Applying in Each Region From 1 July 2026
June 11, 2026
Source: New Zealand Ministry of Health
Background
Under section 53 of the Residential Care and Disability Support Services Act 2018, the Director-General of Health has determined the maximum contribution that applies in each region for long-term aged residential care.
The maximum contribution is the maximum weekly amount (inclusive of GST) that a resident assessed as requiring long-term residential care (through a needs assessment and service coordination agency) is required to pay for contracted care services provided to them in the region in which their rest home or continuing care hospital is located.
The maximum contribution is the same for all residents regardless of the type of contracted care services they receive. It is equivalent to the rest home contract price applying to residential care facilities in each region.
The maximum contribution set by this notice applies from 1 July 2026 and replaces the previous maximum contribution notice published in the New Zealand Gazette, 24 June 2025, Notice No.2025-go3402.
Description of Regions
The appendix of this notice sets out the maximum contribution rates. The appendix contains two parts:
- Part 1, which sets out the rates that apply within Territorial Local Authority (TLA) boundaries; and
- Part 2, which sets out the rates that apply within specific Statistical Areas, which are smaller subregions within the TLA boundaries specified in Part 1.
The rate specified for the relevant region in Part 1 applies unless the facility is in a statistical area region set out in Part 2, in which case the rate specified in Part 2 applies. This reflects that a higher maximum contribution rate applies in the isolated rural localities represented by the Statistical Area Regions in Part 2 of the Table.
Statistics New Zealand has a geographic boundary viewer that displays the TLA areas and statistical areas in the appendix on a map of New Zealand. See here for more information: Geographic Boundary Viewer
Health New Zealand will notify residences of the maximum contribution rate that applies to their facility. The facility will inform residents.
Needs Assessment and Service Coordination (NASC) Agencies, Specialised Processing Services, the Ministry of Social Development and residential care providers will also be able to advise the maximum contribution rate for a facility.
Dated at Wellington this 28th day of May 2026.
RUTH ISAAC, Acting Director-General of Health.

6. Tourism pioneer AJ Hackett Bungy NZ prepares to launch new world-first experience
June 12, 2026
Tourism pioneer AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand is set to launch the world’s highest lift-and-descent ride at Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower this month.
SkyRide is a new 192-metre high vertical adventure experience that lifts customers up the outside of the Sky Tower before delivering a high-speed, controlled descent back to ground level. The lift portion of the experience sees customers ascend at approximately six metres per second – faster than the tower’s internal lifts – reaching the observation deck in about 90 seconds.
The introduction of a new multi-mode ride system – designed in-house by AJHBNZ’s experienced design team in partnership with specialist engineers – means that the existing SkyJump is also in line for a significant upgrade. The multi-mode system now offers customers a range of ways to experience a heart-pumping descent from NZ’s tallest building:
SkyRide: From ground-level at the corner of Auckland’s Victoria and Federal Streets, customers are lifted to the top of the tower before experiencing an exhilarating vertical drop ride, 192m high. This will become the world’s highest lift-and-descent ride and can be experienced as a single or tandem option.
The new experiences will complement the existing SkyWalk – AJHBNZ’s hugely popular walk around the outer edge of the Sky Tower, 192m above ground.
The new multi-mode system will be certified and inspected by WorkSafe under the Amusement Device Regulations for New Zealand, and over the coming days, passers-by will see more testing of the rides beforeAJHBNZ opens SkyRide officially on Friday, June 26.
AJHBNZ co-founder and managing director Henry van Asch says SkyRide reflects the company’s continued focus on pushing boundaries while making iconic structures more engaging for visitors.
“SkyRide is a world-first for the height it reaches and continues our mission to redefine what’s possible in vertical adventure experiences,” he explains. “It offers a completely new way for locals and visitors to experience Auckland’s most recognisable landmark.”
Designed to appeal to a wide range of adventurers, SkyRide is expected to attract Aucklanders looking for a new challenge, domestic visitors, and international tourists seeking a standout urban adventure. The experience further strengthens Auckland’s position as a must‑visit destination for adventure tourism.
