Rutherford Street is closed between Melling Link and Connolly Street following a crash.
The single-vehicle crash was reported to emergency services about 5.30am.
One person is reported to have serious injuries.
The road is expected to be closed for some time and motorists are asked to avoid the area.
Heading into Lower Hutt, there is no left turn off the Melling Bridge.
