13 November 2025
New Zealand had a net migration gain of 12,400 in the September 2025 year, down from a net gain of 42,400 in the September 2024 year, according to provisional estimates released by Stats NZ today.
The net migration gain in the September 2025 year was the lowest for a September year since 2013 (excluding 2021 and 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic).
“Net migration fell in the September 2025 year compared with the September 2024 year, due to fewer migrant arrivals and more migrant departures,” international migration statistics spokesperson Bryan Downes said.
There were 138,900 migrant arrivals in the September 2025 year, down from 157,300 in the September 2024 year and similar to levels between 2015 and 2018, which averaged around 140,000 annually.
