Old soul, new life.
Anyone who has been to Old Papatoetoe will know that there’s a lot happening in the neighbourhood now.
Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board deputy chair Vi Hausia, a local of Papatoetoe, shares, “Exciting changes are underway in Old Papatoetoe! This is something we’ve worked towards for years, and now we’re only months away from enjoying the new facilities and open spaces.”
It’s exciting to see big changes happening in this community but we know this can come with some disruption.

Chambers Laneway upgrade

Located next to the Papatoetoe Chambers building, the upgraded laneway runs from and includes the Civic Plaza on St George Street, through to the Wallace Road car park and Piko Toetoe development.
This project is largely complete and is now open to the public while the final touches are underway, With the painting of a new Mana Whenua-designed mural underway and final planting scheduled for autumn.
The upgraded laneway is now more open, greener and welcoming.
Cambridge Terrace extension (off Puhinui Road)
- Cambridge Terrace extension is under construction and is due for completion in mid-2025.
This project will create a connection from Cambridge Terrace to Stadium Lane through to Wallace Road for vehicles and pedestrians. It will improve access to Allan Brewster Leisure Centre and Stadium Reserve.
There will be:
Wider footpaths, safe crossing points and a separated cycle lane coming to Cambridge Terrace.
Stadium Reserve (just off Tavern Lane, behind New World Papatoetoe)
Construction on the upgrade of Stadium Reserve started in February and will be complete later this year.
This project will:

bring an epic new park including a playground

offer enhanced green space for the community

and provide a kick-a-ball area to Papatoetoe aiming to encourage more use of the space make it safer and meet the needs of a growing population.

The Piko Toetoe development
In addition to these public realm projects, private development is also underway, bringing more homes to the area. The Piko Toetoe development on Tavern Lane will introduce a mix of 2, 3, and 4-bedroom terraced houses to the area. This development will feature public pedestrian laneways to which will contribute to improved connectivity between the main street and Stadium Reserve. Construction is expected to take approximately 17 months, with public laneways open mid-2026.
Overall, this series of projects is set to create a more connected, accessible, and vibrant Old Papatoetoe.
What’s coming up?
Patch in the Park on Saturday 12th April 2025, 12-4pm, Burnside Park, Old Papatoetoe will offer fun kids’ activities and exciting performances from local musicians. Kids can unleash their creativity on corflute cut-outs, which will be showcased on the construction fencing around town.
