Drivers travelling on highways in the lower North and Upper South Islands can expect a wet end to the week.
The Metservice has issued weather watches for both regions for tomorrow (Friday), meaning drivers must take extra care on the roads.
A Heavy Rain Watch has been issued for Tasman west of Motueka, the Richmond/Bryant Ranges, and the Rai Valley. This will affect State Highway 60 in Tākaka/Golden Bay and State Highway 6 from Whangamoa Hill to Havelock. Drivers should be prepared for slips, rockfalls, and localised flooding.
In the North Island, from late afternoon and overnight, a Strong Wind Watch is in force for Wellington and a Heavy Rain Watch for the Tararua Ranges. Northerly winds are forecast to approach severe gales in exposed areas.
Drivers of high-sided vehicles, light vehicles, and motorcyclists should exercise caution when travelling on State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill and Wainui Saddle on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully. Be prepared for hazards such as wind gusts, wind-blown debris, and potential tree falls.
The poor weather will also coincide with peak traffic on Friday afternoon. Commuters must drive to the conditions – if the roads are wet, increase your following distance, avoid sudden braking, and use your headlights if visibility is poor.
Roads can be closed at short notice in bad weather. Drivers should check road and weather conditions before they travel.
