Hikuwai Bailey Bridge will be closed overnight this Thursday for surfacing works.

The bridge, on State Highway 35 north of Tolaga Bay, will be closed between 7pm on Thursday (11 April) and will reopen at 5am on Friday.

Road users are asked to use the nearby Pourau Road detour during the closure.

Crews will be attaching a stablising geo-grid netting to the wooden bridge deck and skid resistant pads at either end of the bridge.

System Manager for Hawke’s Bay/Tairāwhiti Martin Colditz says as the temperatures get cooler and winter gets closer, it’s important to make sure the bridge remains safe for all users.

“We’ve had feedback from some road users, especially motorcyclists, that the wooden surface is too slippery.”
