Resurfacing SH1 re-starts on a section of Timaru’s Evans St next week – from Monday 27 November, says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

The work, between Waimataitai and Pringle Streets, will occur largely at night to avoid significant disruptions to daytime traffic on SH1. It will continue through to the Christmas road work close-down period, which starts on Wednesday, 20 December, says Scott McKenzie, Waka Kotahi Senior Network Manager for South Canterbury.

All going to plan, this section of Evans St will be marked up and ready for the holiday traffic before Christmas, says Mr McKenzie.

“Our contractor has already attempted to get the asphalting along this stretch of Evans St done but had to stop when traffic resumed due to poor ground conditions. This time, we are using a different technique with a deeper layer of structural pavement strengthening. This approach should reduce risks and we have included further testing,” he says.

“Using this approach will take a little longer as we build up the layers of material beneath the surface before the asphalt layers at the end,” he says. “We will be finishing the surface using a small stone asphalt for a quieter ride and less traffic noise for surrounding residents.”

  • Work will be underway between 8pm and 6am, mostly with the highway reduced to a single lane in places. Potentially some local road detours may be in place.
  • This work is weather dependent so if it is wet, this section of seal may go into the New Year.
  • The area south of Pringle St to Newman and Hobbs Streets is scheduled for resurfacing in the New Year.

Waka Kotahi thanks all local residents living near the site and road users for their patience while this key section of resurfacing is successfully completed.
