Road crews are stepping up their efforts to complete underslip and rockfall works at State Highway 6 at Dellows Bluff near Murchison by Christmas.

Contractors have reworked the programme, which will see them begin a pavement digout at the western end of the work site next week.

The works mean the highway will be restricted to one lane under stop/go traffic management for four weeks, 24/7, from Monday, 20 November, until the project is completed.

Because of the road’s narrowness, the work involved, and the machinery being used, there isn’t enough room for two lanes of traffic to pass through the site safely while the work is underway.

The intention is to have the highway fully restored and both lanes open for the Christmas/New Year holiday period and the expected higher holiday traffic volumes.

Works schedule

  • Monday, 20 November to Friday, 22 December, 24/7 – stop/go traffic management from Hinehaka Road to the intersection of SH65 (Dellow’s Bluff)
  • The road will be subject to a temporary speed limit of 50km/h during this time.

Waka Kotahi wants to thank residents and road users for their cooperation and patience while this vital maintenance work is done.

Drivers must obey road work signs and temporary speed limits. This is for your safety and that of our work crews.
