Haast Pass/Makarora SH6 travellers have a third convoy time available from today (Tuesday), says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

  • The highway is currently closed daytimes with managed convoys.
  • It is open overnight from 4.30 pm to 8 am, controlled with a traffic signal near Muddy Creek slip site.

Three convoy times are now available daytimes: 10 am, midday and 2 pm.

“Based on feedback we’ve had from bus companies, we’re adding in a convoy at 12pm to accommodate those travellers,” says Nicole Felts, Journey Manager for Waka Kotahi in Otago and Southland.

Convoy locations for northbound (Haast-bound) traffic are Makarora township, and Blue Pools for southbound (Lake Hawea-bound) traffic. Please allow extra time to reach the convoy start point.

Successful weekend with traffic signals managing traffic flows

The road was successfully opened to traffic over the weekend, with crews returning to the site this week to continue working to clear slip material around daytime traffic convoys.

  • Convoys are scheduled to be escorted through the site at 10am, midday and 2pm this week when the highway is otherwise closed.
  • Traffic lights will be in place for travel between 4:30pm overnight until 8am, with a single lane open.

Crews are working hard to re-open the road to two lanes as soon as possible.
