Wellington drivers must be ready for lane closures on State Highway 1, Ngauranga Gorge, tonight as contractors carry out urgent slip-clearing work.

This work will close two southbound lanes on the highway immediately south of Newlands. The closure will run from 9 pm tonight until 5.30 am on Friday, with traffic management to be put in place from 7 pm.

One southbound lane will remain open for traffic, but temporary lower speed limits will be in place.

Drivers and users of the Ngauranga Gorge path must take extra care when passing the worksite and follow traffic controllers’ instructions.

  • Southbound drivers can expect to be guided via the Newlands southbound offramp to rejoin the highway under the Newlands overbridge in one lane passing the works.
  • Cyclists and pedestrians will be guided through the worksite by a traffic controller.

Drivers can expect delays when travelling into Wellington through the work area and should allow extra time for their journey. These are important safety works and essential for keeping the highway safe for traffic.
