People are advised to expect delays when travelling on State Highway 4 (SH4) north of the intersection with Hawken Road while important work is underway to repair an underslip, which occurred in November 2022 following heavy rain, and restore the road to two lanes.
Waka Kotahi Manawatū/Whanganui and Taranaki System Manager Rob Service says following the installation of a temporary culvert and shoulder widening on 4 and 5 July, construction of a rock wall can begin to repair the slip.
“Crews will be working on the slip Monday to Friday between the hours of 7am and 7pm. Until works are complete, Stop/Go traffic management will be in place 24/7 on SH4 for approximately 535 metres, beginning 1km north of the intersection of SH4 and Hawken Road. A 30km/h temporary speed limit is also in place along this section of road. People should allow for short delays,” says Mr Service.
It is expected that the works will be complete by mid-October 2023. In the event of bad weather, work will begin on the next fine day.
People are asked to follow traffic management directions and adhere to speed restrictions to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
“We want to thank all road users for their support and understanding during this time as we continue to work to strengthen the long-term resilience of this stretch of road,” says Mr Service.
