Over the last few years, Eke Panuku Development Auckland has been busy creating Waiwharariki Anzac Square in the heart of Takapuna. This will be a new public space where people can come together to meet, sit, relax, and play. It’s all part of their plan to create a safe, accessible and vibrant town centre that makes the most of Takapuna’s sea and lake location.
They’re very excited that Waiwharariki Anzac Square is almost finished and expect it to open at the end of August 2023.
Once the new square is open, the Takapuna Sunday Market – a key feature in Takapuna for over 30 years – will shift slightly into this new public space. Its home is currently next door, in the car park at 40 Anzac Street.
Waiwharariki Anzac Square is going to be an amazing location for the market. There will be lots of space for stalls, plus there’s new seating, a water feature, outdoor dining areas, lighting, trees and other greenery, and it’s close to Takapuna Beach.
The Sunday market is an important regular fixture in Takapuna that is loved by many and draws people to the neighbourhood, adding to the liveliness of the town centre at the weekend.
The current market operator has done a fantastic job developing the market over its life and has kept it going through some challenging times, like the COVID-19 pandemic and recent weather events. As they are now finishing up at the end of August 2023, Eke Panuku is on the lookout for a new market operator to help take the market to the next level. See here for more information.
A new market operator will help bring together market stalls that celebrate local flavours, fresh fruit and vegetables and artisan, quality products and showcase the vibrant, creative spirit of the Takapuna community, including live music. The market will also focus on sustainable products and practices and working towards generating zero waste.
Eke Panuku is looking forward to the new square opening and the new opportunities this will help create to bring the community together for the market and other events, or just sitting and watching the world go by.
