2023 Census media advisory

Note: This advisory provides the census return figures (2023 Census tally) for reporting on 30 June 2023. Stats NZ will provide a final 2023 Census tally update Monday 3 July (pm).

As of 2.30pm Friday 30 June, 4,563,569 people have returned their Individual Form in the 2023 Census.

This equates to around 89% of the population of New Zealand (based on the estimated population at 30 June 2022). It compares with 82% in the 2018 Census.

Forms are estimated to have been returned by 74% of people of Māori descent and 75% of people of Māori ethnicity, 79% of people of Pacific ethnicity, 92% of people of Asian ethnicity, and 85% of people aged between 15 and 29 years.

In coming weeks, Stats NZ will produce an estimated national collection response rate.

The final coverage and response rates will be released through a post census survey later in 2024.
