A closure and detour are needed tonight for urgent repairs on State Highway 1 north of Hamilton.
Heavy rain this week has led to potholes developing in the southbound lanes of the Ngāruawāhia section of the Waikato Expressway where remedial and safety improvements are underway.
The works have reduced several kilometres of SH1 to single lane and the combined pressure of heavy rain and traffic has seen potholes develop.
Contractors need to close the south-bound lane to mill and fill some areas, rather than continue with temporary patching.
The detour is via Ngāruawāhia on the old highway between Gordonton Road and Horotiu interchanges, from 7pm to 5am. It adds about 5mins to travel times.
HPMVs must use SH1B and over-weight vehicles need to use SH2/27, under an existing Overweight permit.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Waikato Systems manager Cara Lauder says the weather this week has put a lot of pressure of the region’s roads and the crews who maintain them.
“Over winter, we have crews out monitoring the highway network, ready to respond once they are aware of potholes and other rain defects,” Ms Lauder says.
“All drivers on our winter roads should expect to encounter potholes – particularly after rainstorms. The key to avoiding damaging your car is to drive to the conditions, especially at night and any time it is raining.’’
Ms Lauder urges drivers to slow down, stay alert and report any potholes so they can get them sorted right away.
“Call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) to let us know about any issues on the state highway network.
“Remember, when you see a hole – call the pothole patrol.”
