State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill, is currently closed as contractors work to clear a slip near the summit on the Wairarapa side of the hill.
Update 6.20 pm:
Contractors have finished clearing the slip and the road is now open to all traffic. Some delays are possible as queued traffic clears.
Waka Kotahi appreciates the closure will have caused frustration for people travelling between Wellington and Wairarapa this afternoon and wants to thank them for their patience and understanding.
The slip was reported around two pm, affecting the southbound lane. The road had been subject to stop/go traffic control at the slip site earlier this afternoon.
The road is now closed to allow contractors to safely remove the slip debris and make the road safe for traffic. The aim is to have the road reopened in the next few hours.
Road users are asked to avoid the area or delay their travel.
An alternative route between Wairarapa and Wellington is via Woodville and Ashurst by Saddle Road – this is a significantly longer journey, and road users should plan their travel accordingly.
Updates on the highway’s status can be found on the Waka Kotahi website.
