Otago Polytechnic | Te Pūkenga automotive ākonga are gearing up to play an important role in ensuring the Otago Rally goes smoothly – even if the roads will be bumpy.
With around 130 cars entered in this year’s rally, learners will be busy helping race officials scrutinise each vehicle to ensure they are safe before their drivers (and co-drivers) strap in and hit the accelerator pedal.
This includes checking roll-cages, seats, harnesses, first-aid kits and, from a compliance point of view, making sure the cars represent the competition class in which they are entered.
This will be the third year Otago Polytechnic automotive learners have helped rally organisers.
Covering approximately 280km and involving a strong international contingent, the Otago Rally begins on Friday 31 March, with scrutineering at Otago Polytechnic’s Mechanical Engineering workshops on Donald St, Kaikorai Valley.
The opening ceremony will be held in the Octagon that night before racing gets underway on 1 April and winds up the following day.
