This is a status update as of midday on 15 March 2023, regarding the Point Howard slip response. We will continue to provide updates over the day on our social media pages and our website (hutt.city/howardroad).
The Hutt City Council emergency operations centre closed at 11:00am today, and Hutt City Council have now taken over the response to the slip. Council staff are actively working with our partners to restore services, including road access and water supply.
Road closures
The cordons remain in place and the roads from 21 Nikau Road and 44 Howard Road are still closed.
Pedestrian access is available from 44 Howard Road to the water tank at 53 Howard Road.
A geotech engineer will be onsite early this afternoon to make a decision about vehicle access beyond the slip site. We’ll provide updates on social media and on our website with any developments as they happen.
Pedestrian access remains set up across the slip site for residents above the slip.
As a precaution, residents are being advised to boil water until further notice.
Wellington Water are assessing options to get contractors and machinery onsite to make the necessary repairs to restore water supply. This will depend on decisions made by the geotech engineer this afternoon.
There are still two water tanks supplied by Wellington Water in the same locations as last night: 53 Howard Road and Marine Drive. Wellington Water continue to have bottled water available at both water tank sites.
Wellington Water will also continue to provide the tankers and bottled water until water supply is restored.
The wastewater system has not been affected, so residents can use water collected from the tankers to refill their toilet cistern, if possible. They can also manually flush the toilet by pouring water into the toilet bowl directly.
Wellington Electricity advised that power was restored to Point Howard residents last night.
The planned electricity outage has been rescheduled to tomorrow, 16 March, and there is more information about planned outages on Wellington Electricity’s website.
