Business financial data: December 2022 quarter – Information release

Business financial data provides sales, purchases, salaries and wages, and operating profit estimates for most market industries in New Zealand, and information on stocks for selected industries. This collection uses a combination of survey, tax, and other administrative data.
Key facts
For all business financial data (BFD) industries, in the December 2022 quarter compared with the December 2021 quarter:
- sales were $200 billion, up $16 billion (8.7 percent)
- purchases were $143 billion, up $12 billion (9.1 percent)
- salaries and wages were $30 billion, up $2.4 billion (9.0 percent)
- operating profit was $27 billion, up $1.7 billion (6.6 percent).
When adjusting for seasonal effects, in the December 2022 quarter compared with the September 2022 quarter:
- sales in 7 of the 14 New Zealand Standard Industrial Output Classification (NZSIOC) level 1 industries increased
- construction (up $1.0 billion); electricity, gas, water, and waste services (down $989 million); and transport, postal, and warehousing (down $580 million) industries had the largest movements in sales.
