2023 Census media advisory

We are providing the following to clarify any questions regarding a second census letter and QR codes:

Census reminder letter:

From Monday 27 February, almost 1.4 million households will be mailed a second pre-census reminder letter with a new access code with a call to action to complete census forms by Census Day 7 March. It is also a call to action to contact 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787) to order paper forms if preferred.

Households where census collectors have delivered census packs will also get a second letter.

This is not an error, but part of the planned process for the 2023 Census.

Households can use the new access code or the one provided in the original census pack. Both are valid and private to their address.

Note: Stats NZ introduced this second pre-census letter following the 2022 field test for the 2023 Census.

QR codes

A4 paper form census packs contain a letter with a QR code which can be used to find out where the nearest NZ Post location is to mail back completed census forms. The QR code is not linked to your access code or needed to fill out census forms.
