Testing has confirmed the strengthening work done on Waiora Waikato Centre at Waikato Hospital last year was successful and the building is no longer considered earthquake prone.
A preliminary assessment in 2021 indicated some elements of the building fell under the 34 percent New Building Standard (NBS) minimum rating. Planning began immediately to strengthen the building with works to take part in two stages – stage 1 to strengthen the roof plant room and stage 2 to strengthen the overall building.
Stage 1 was completed last year, bringing the plant room up to compliance. Ahead of stage 2 a detailed assessment was undertaken for the rest of the building. On this closer inspection it was confirmed the building achieved 50 percent NBS. This meant the stage 2 works were no longer required.
