Update at 2.32pm: SH2 has just re-opened to one lane between Whatatutu intersection (north of Te Karaka) and Matawai.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises State Highway 2 is closed between the Whatatutu Intersection just north of Te Karaka and Matawai township due to an overslip that is blocking the road in both directions.
Assessments need to be undertaken before we can advise a timeframe for re-opening. This section of road is within an area of SH2 between Gisborne and Ōpōtiki that currently has closures in place overnight between 7pm and 7am. Please be aware that there is no guarantee that the road will be reopened today.
People are encouraged to delay their travel and keep an eye on the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website and the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency – Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne Facebook page for up-to-date information on the closure.
Waka Kotahi thanks everyone for their patience.
Please note this information can change rapidly – ensure you check the latest weather conditions with MetService, and consult the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner for the most up to date information on road closures.
